Dairy free

I started cutting dairy a week ago bc L had green, stringy poops and very painful gas. Last night he finally started having yellow poop again. It's still a little stringy, though. His gas seems less painful now, too. Is this a definite sign that he is sensitive to dairy? Should I also cut soy to see if the stringiness subsides? Or give the dairy another week to come out of our systems?

Re: Dairy free

  • Like you, I saw a difference after a week or so but R was not completely normal for 4 weeks which I have heard to be normal. I was about ready to cut soy in week 3 then everything was so much better in week 4. So basically if LO is improving I would wait it out but it won't hurt to trial cutting soy if you want. Hope he is back to normal soon!

  • I agree with PPs that you should wait a bit longer. I seen improvement with G after a week, but his poop was still weird until 4-5 weeks out.

  • That's awesome Jane! I'm so glad he's showing some improvement!! Like PPs said, give it a few more weeks. Soy is in freaking everything. You don't want to have to cut it unless you have to.
It takes quite a while for the gut to heal up and to clear all the milk proteins from your system.
Hang in there Jane. Cutting dairy gets much easier with practice. And FYI, Oreos are dairy free. (Not soy free though. =(( )

  • My DD2 is allergic to everything and started showing signs as early as 2 months old. With this one when he started having the same signs at 2 months old I cut out dairy figuring it was the same thing. When we went for DD2s allergy follow-up I mentioned how this one was having issues. He suggested we test for dairy and soy allergies in him so I would have a better answer. I am glad I did because he actually doesn't have the same allergies. However, I am guessing most peds don't know you can test this early. Hope things continue to improve.

  • Thanks, y'all. I'll continue on the dairy-free diet and hold off on eliminating soy for now.

Oh, and whoever recommended Lara bars for a sweet snack, yum!!! ( @CLLDLL was it you?) I need to learn how to make these!

  • my husband used to make date balls (until he broke the food processor), which are very yummy and taste similar to lara bars. Here is a recipe similar to the one he used, he used to make a couple different flavors though. The cherry chocolate were always my favorite. I will ask him for the recipe when he wakes up.

  • Ok.

While I'm thinking about it, is there any good reason to keep a margarita maker when I already have a blender? My brother gave it to me years ago and I've never used it. I have kept it thinking we'll have a party and make frozen cocktails one day, but we never have.

  • @stoofewok - L's gas wasn't 24/7 by any means. His would crop up at night, and he would wake up shrieking in pain. (My toddler was a lot fussier with gas all of the time, but he was on formula and was Dx with reflux at 9 weeks.)

I was in a habit of eating a bowl of ice cream at bedtime, so I have a feeling that's why it was worse at night.

  • Had a rough night with lots of gas and green poo. Turns out there is dairy in the taco seasoning DH used on out supper yesterday. Could such a tiny amount really make that much difference? Or could L be gassy from the beans?

  • Btw. Last night we ordered a sampler app plate from bdubs. All of it contained milk (breading I guess?) and I didn't realize til after we got it. And I ate it. I feel like a complete asshole. And it wasn't even that good, I was just that hungry. And felt bad for ordering such a huge amount of food that I couldn't eat.
I hate when that happens!  We have half a roast left that I can't eat bc MH put soy in it accidentally.  Now I feel like it's wasted.  (MH sucks at taking lunch to work, I take mine every day.)

I think if it was a food thing she would poop more than normal, no?

I don't know. Her lack of pooping and need to fart seems to cause her a
lot of distress. Sometimes farts are nbd but sometimes she'll scream/cry
for hours until she farts and then is fine. And on poop days she seems
to have a lot more distress (crying, not sleeping) until she poops and
then she'll be out for hours. I feel like during those times she has
more stinky spit up, but I'm not sure if that's in my head, since spit
up is hard to measure. At those times she definitely seems to be happier
upright than laying down, but a recline like in a RnP doesn't seem to
help much. And then other times she is just fine, no problem, happy as a
clam wherever you want to leave her. It doesn't help that her last poop
was green and mucousy (but not the two before that). She has her 4
month doctors appointment today and I want to ask about all of this, but
I'm not even sure what to ask.

Just print out what you just typed and give it to the doctor. So many times I wish I had done that b/c I always forget to ask something.

  • FYI, my pedi was baffled by D's (and later G's) protein intolerance.  She had heard of it, but didn't really know how to Dx or treat it other than trying different formulas.  We eventually seen a GI specialist for D.  I knew what to look for with G, so eliminating dairy fixed his issues much earlier.

Anyway, my 2 cents is definitely ask your pedi, but do your own research and trust your mommy gut too.  Pedi's don't always know everything.

  • Probably not @theultimatesak.  Especially if it's possible he has full blown allergies, not just an intolerance.

I just realized all the milk I pumped last week is soy tainted.  I mean, I knew she was reacting all week, and it took me forever to realize why.  But now what do I do with all that milk?  I guess mark it as soy and save it till I know whether she will grow out of it?

That's a whole different worry I didn't think much about.  On days where she's reacting and I can't figure out why for the life of me, it could always be a tainted bottle.  Ugh, this is so frustrating/complicated!

  • It's only about 32 or 36 ounces that I am sure are tainted.  Maybe when she's closer to 9 months she won't react to it, or won't react to such small exposures.  Hopefully.

I hate the whole pumped bottle element in trying to figure things out! I pump every morning on top of pumping while she's at daycare, so her bottles could come from several different days/times. I was going to save my tainted freezer stash to see if I could reintroduce it later. But I finally decided that it's degrading while it's in the freezer and I'm pumping more than I'm using so my stash is growing and I don't NEED what's there. Especially if it's going to bother her another baby needs it more than her.

  • Not a momma yet but my husband is extremely lactose intolerant so I know a lot about this. It takes about 3 weeks to get it out of your system (and your babies, and your breast milk) so stick with it for 3 weeks. To really pinpoint the allergy, only cut one thing at a time. I wouldn't cut soy out.

I would recommend cutting all milk. That includes items with milk ingredients - breads, baked goods, cheese, sour cream, yogurt, milk, a lot of cereals and cereal bars... it is in so much stuff! Cut it all out for 3 weeks and see how things go. Don't be surprised if you feel pretty good yourself as most people are at least somewhat lactose intolerant. The term is sort of a misnomer, there should be a term for lactose tolerance because of how rare it really is.

  • @afwifelife - I didn't know that! Thanks for clearing it up. In that case, I would cut them both and later reintroduce small amounts to see how it goes.

  • DD1 had MSPI. I was poorly informed and ended up switching her to super expensive formula. We were luckily because she grew out of it by one year.

I was much better informed so when DD2 started with it at 3 weeks, I cut all dairy/soy out and we had improvements each week. It took about 6 week to have normal BF poo.

I just wanted to add that you will want to check any vitamins. I had to change DD's vit D and my own prenatals. There is also a good MSPI check in on the Bf board and some of them have other allergies/intolerances

Can I jack the thread and ask a question? Is it possible that R has a mild intolerance of some sort because she has never liked milk (it has never been part of her regular diet since weaning at 14 months) and if she drinks more than an ounce or two, she says her tummy hurts. But she can eat cheese and yogurt without issue. So what's the deal?

  • That sounds more like lactose intolerance.  Some people can tolerate some forms of lactose like in cheese and yogurt, but not so much with milk and ice cream.  *purely anecdotal*

  • Thanks TJ and Maple. I kind of wondered if that was the case, but we have no family history of it, so we were pretty clueless on the subject. I guess we'll keep an eye on Alex as well for similar symptoms.

Is it worth getting her tested (can you test for lactose intolerance?) at some point or just assume she is and not give her cows milk anymore? We drink almond milk at home, but she could potentially be offered it by other family members.

  • Thanks for the legit answer maple.  I don't think there is a test for it.  And I wouldn't worry about it for now.  She already knows that if she drinks milk her tummy hurts.  So she would probably decline it.  If she has other caretakers, let them know she is sensitive to regular milk, and that you offer her almond milk instead.  Just my opinion.
