A hanging wet bag unzipped will not have smell issues? I've heard that... Could you put anything in the wet bag to make sure there are no smell issues?

you could put a few drops of a good smelling essential oil onto a cloth and put it at the bottom of the pail…but it's not really necessary

You really won't get smells if you leave it uncovered/open. I use a Kissaluv pail liner in a trash bin without a lid (I actually recently "lost" the lid because my MIL kept putting it on the pail) and the pail liner actually has a little piece of absorbent fabric on the inside to put essential oils for smell purposes. You don't need to use it, but we have a nice oil mix someone at my yoga studio makes so our nursery has a lovely citrus smell from using that now
We have a open wet bag hanging in the bedroom and an open trash can w/ pail liner in the bathroom. When the diapers come off they immediately go in the wet bag. Twice a day I dump the wet bag into the trash can and spray/soak any that need it. If I have a poopy one from my 19 mo old I spray immediately. It's good to have the can in the bathroom so I am not carrying a drippy diaper around the house. I should note that I have 2 in cloth.
ETA: If your wet bag/pail is smelly you probably are having stink issues with your diapers. If you diapers are getting properly cleaned and have no build-up, they shouldn't have an overwhelming smell when dirty. And when we travel for the weekend and take our wet bag I sprinkle it with Rockin' Green Shake It Up Pail Refresher just for good measure. It's not necessary but I got it as a gift and I like the scent.
