3rd Trimester

c section

If you were following my other post I said that in going to be having a c section in less then a week now and I'm super nervous about it. If anyone has any tips on it please help. This is my first baby and its new territory for me and my mom as well. What should I bring? What does the hospital provide? Will I be able to breastfeed soon after? I really have so many questions. I was perfectly fine and calm at the doctors and when we did the tour of the maternity ward a few days ago but now kinda in freak out mood....

Re: c section

  • I'm just looking for general advice. I'm aware that people on the internet wont know what my hospital does but every bit of advice I can get helps.

RCS on the 29th and I'm packing pretty much everything @DaisyBlinks said.  A lot of your questions are hospital policy and you would be better off calling l&d.  One thing I would ask if they supply, and if not buy one, is a binder or wrap.  It helps so much with pain and movement.  I would recommend getting up and walking as soon as they let you, but don't over do it.  And stay up on the pain meds, there is no award for toughing it out, and you will feel much better.  Good Luck!!!

  • Planned c-sections really aren't THAT bad, they're much smoother than unplanned or emergencies. You have to take it easy for a few weeks and it's not exactly fun, but you just have to suck it up when it's what best for the baby and for you.

There's a lot of lists online for what to take to the hospital with you. Google "C-section hospital bag" and you can read up and tweak it based on your lifestyle and your personal needs. I'm keeping it simple this time and just bringing three sets of comfy clothing, toiletries for a four-day hospital stay, a nursing pillow and my laptop, cell phone and camera (and chargers for everything). All I'm taking for the baby is a coming home outfit, a pretty blanket for photos and a carseat.

I know it's scary, but try to relax. Use the hospital staff when you need to. Take it easy when you come home. It's going to be ok.
This and this and this again!  I would stress the nursing pillow.  For some reason, I wasn't sure that I would need mine, but it's SO important to have, especially after the c-section.  Other than that, I would add socks with grippers on the bottom or shoes that you can slip on.  You will definitely need to get up and walk as soon as they'll let you, but putting on shoes is very difficult and you don't want to slip in your socks!  Also - just know that the first time out of bed is kind of awful, but it gets better after that!  Moving is important, just don't overdo it.  And like pp said, stay ahead of the pain with your meds. This is not a time to be a hero, take those meds and get some help!  Recovery went really well for me, but I also took it easy.  Good luck!
  • I held the Bobby against my abdomen on the way home and it definitely helped.

Like others have said, there's really no difference in what you'd bring for a vaginal delivery. I agree that you should call L&D and see what they provide. Or, if you haven't, go to their classes (if they offer them) and you should be able to get a list there. Calling your hospital is the best bet.

Here are some things that I packed:
    - loose clothes, like pajamas
    - nursing friendly shirts
    - extra pillows
    - nursing pillow
    - toiletries
    - everything that I wanted for DS that the hospital didn't provide. For him, I provided mittens (because they didn't), and a onesie for him to wear home. They pretty much provided everything else.

    That's pretty much it.

  • One thing I'm bringing that I didn't see on here were some comfy granny panties with a soft waist band.
  • Amen on the Granny panties. Brought some bikini cut ones and they hit right on my incision. OUCH! Stay on the drugs, move as soon as possible, and know that everything will go GREAT!
