Sleepy Time Woes

We are having sleep issues. Here's the story. I finally weaned Hannah about two weeks ago. Getting her to fall asleep now is a nightmare that takes forever now. We basically have to lie with her in our bed till she falls asleep. Now she's been having problems staying asleep for over a month now. She is still teething her two year molars, thats been a month and a half. Plus she caught a cold in there too. But it's at the pont now where she wakes up repeatedly in the night, won't go back to sleep unless we take her in our bed. We put her back when she's asleep but it doesn't last very long. So since we're all very tired she's been sleeping in our bed from around 3:30-5 onwards. But she sleeps better and will sleep in if she's in our bed. It's like she's reverted to pre sleep training cuz this is what she was doing at 9 months. She's almost 20 months for those on mobile.

Do you guys think it's just the teeth? Should we try sleep training again? Anybody else go through something like this? I really need my sleep so that's why we kinda cave all the time. But I think in the long run this is a bad habit we are forming.

  • I would personally sleep train again. That's just because I can't handle little sleepers in my bed. A is a terrible bed mate, she kicks and shoves and no one sleeps!

  • srveatch ya Hannah isn't the greatest bed mate either. I mean she's fine for me, but she kicks hubby all the time. He woke up last night very angry b/c she kicked him in the sac while sleeping. He ended up leaving the two of us alone for most of the night. That's why I think it's time to do something. I don't want to have to kick my hubby out of my bed, I like sleeping beside him. But it seems like the alternative is lots of screaming and no sleep... sigh.

Anybody have advice on sleep training a 20 month old? It's not as easy when you just lie them down.

  • Is she old enough to start understanding logic? It was then or close to then that we were able to explain to E that it was night time and she needed to stay in her crib. Then we would remind her of something that would happen in the morning such as the nanny would be there, or her friend was coming over, so we had to go night night so we were rested for tomorrow. If that doesn't work I'd try re-sleep training. You need your rest for sure.

  • I don't think she is quite ready to listen to reason yet. But it's worth adding to the night routine

  • I agree with PP that it's time to sleep train again. It sounds like she knows she'll be able to sleep with mommy and daddy if she wakes up and cries, so she isn't trying to soothe herself back to sleep. Sleep training seems like such a daunting task but life changing for sure (which you know from when Hannah was 9 months). Good luck getting her back to a good sleep routine! And big hugs mama - hope you get some rest!

  • Hey Robeano. I would def try sleep training again. We had a similar issue last week with our twins waking in the middle of the night. Hubby started taking them into a spare bedroom and laying with them and wasn't understanding why I was mad about it. Then they started waking in the night expecting that and even going so far as to point to the bed during the day and smile and say dada.

Anyway we did sleep training for as a few nights and they're doing much better. I know it's tough but remember that they are very smart and very aware at this age. They understand routine. And like my pedi says. If they aren't sick they should sleep through the night. And if you're worried about teeth give her a but of Tylenol or even Motrin before bed so it lasts eight hours. Good luck! Sorry sleep issue suck big time.
