Cloth Diapering

Rate my NB stash plan

Hello ladies,

My baby girl is not due until December but I am anxious to get my diaper stash all together so I can stop worrying about it. Seriously, it keeps me up at night. I'm crazy. I have been doing lots of research online and went to a CD class last weekend and this is what I plan to purchase to get us through the NB stage.

3 Bumpkins Velcro pockets $40
12 NB Bumpkins contours w/ 2 NB Covers $78
10 NB Alva pockets $50

Total 25 diapers $167.70

Then the plan to to purchase 20 Alva OS once she starts to out grow NB sizes.

What do you think? Do I need more? How do you feel about Alva or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Rate my NB stash plan

  • Alva nb are not very popular.

Have you looked into the kawaii P&Ns? They are almost as cheap and they get a lot of love. (Look at the new redesigns, they get smaller and have an extra gusset. )

You want more like 36 changes for newborn. I would add a dozen prefolds and a few more covers.

What attracted you to the contours? If you want something easier than prefolds, I would look into the GMD workhorse fitteds. They are inexpensive and a very popular nb option. Better than contours at containing poop because of the leg elastics. Or you could add some of these to bring your total up.

I've had a few contours in the past. I didn't hate them, but for the price, GMD workhorses are WAY better at containing NB poo. Definitely aim for at least 30 NB changes, perferrably 36 with 3-4 covers if you go with that many pockets or 6-8 covers if your stash is mostly prefolds/flats/fitteds.

You can get away with closer to 24 OS changes since by then baby won't be pooping as often. Alva OS pockets get more love than the NBs do, but I wouldn't make my whole stash one brand/style. What if Alva don't fit your kid well or you hate stuffing pockets? Maybe look into a diaper trial of OS stuff to learn what you like. Or buy stuff that intrigues you as it goes on sale between now and when baby fits OS. Sell what you don't like for close to what you paid and get more of what you do like.

Thanks for the suggestions. The woman who taught the CD class recommended the contours but it sounds like they may not be the best. I looked at the kawaii P&N and those look great. It says that the NB AIOs can be used at covers for inserts. Does that mean I can put microfiber inserts in and just change the inserts instead of the whole diaper?

No, the only way this would work is if you laid a prefold or NON microfiber insert on top of the diaper and IF the diaper stayed mostly dry. A microfiber insert must go inside, it should never go against skin.

It would make more sense to just get more covers.

  • I wouldn't get that many Alva pockets. I had three and hated them! I had to twist the tabs and stIll couldn't get a good fit. I ended up selling them off quickly! BG nb diapers were one of my faves but some babies outgrow the absorbancy fairly quickly. My daughter was never a heavy wetter so we didn't have this problem. Best of luck! :)

  • Flats and covers! Versatile and most likely all you'll need absorbency wise for the first couple of months.
  • I have a few Alva NB pockets and I hate the fit with them. They are just now starting to fit DS at 2 months old, but so are my Alva OS pockets. So it seems pointless to have the NB pockets.

My NB stash is made up of mostly GMD workhorses and prefolds with covers. Love them.

  • Basically what everyone else said about looking at Kawaii P&N and GMD workhorses. And you definitely need more covers (I had 8 but could have gotten away with 6). The workhorses ended up being one of my favorite NB diapers. If you get the snapless workhorses they are easier to customize the fit - you'll need a few snappis for those.

It's usually recommended to have 36 NB changes if you want to was EOD.

  • Great suggestions! So if I get 12 Kawaii P&Ns and 24 prefolds would that work if I used the Kawaii's as covers? Plus I already have 3 bumpinks velcro pockets which I was told fit a NB. Would I need to use a clippy or can I just lay a prefold inside the cover? I want to be sure its not too difficult, I really want to be successful with this CD endeavor without breaking the bank.

Thanks, I really appreciate all of your suggestions!

No, because then you would really only have 24 changes, or maybe 30 if you used 6 of the P&Ns as covers and 6 as diapers.  You could count them as a diaper or as a cover, but not both. At the nb stage, it is really, really unlikely that a pocket used as a cover would be able to be reused, so you would probably need a new one at every change, in which case you would essentially only have 12 changes.
    Does that make sense?
With a real cover, you can wipe it off or let it dry, and alternate between a few covers during the day. You can't do that with a pocket because it can't be wiped off.

If it is cost you are worried about, look into these covers: https://www.assuntastore.com/Diapering/Tiny-Diaper-Cover-p129.html
They are my favorites, and less than $5 each. (there seems to be something wrong with their website right now, so if this doesn't work, try it sometime later)

Love these! can I just lay a prepold in these or do I need to use a clippy? I'm concerned about the convince of the clippys and prefolds + covers. I don't want to be tempted to quit if its too much of hassle. Sam egoes for the fitted, that just seem like to doing 2 diaper changes in 1.

  • For a NB, a snappi is really what you need with prefolds. Otherwise, you'll probably need to change covers more often as poop will get everywhere. To contain the poop, the diaper needs to be secured around the baby. It's really not difficult once you get the hang of it. If you are concerned, get the fitteds (GMD workhorses). You can get those in snaps too. I promise, it's not a big hassle.  :-)

  • ^what they said. In theory you could just trifold a prefold and lay it in, but nb poop is so runny it would end up on the covers, and you would need a lot more. A snappi is not too hard, much easier than pins!

And while it is true that covers add and extra step, that extra step is really nice when you are trying to contain liquid poop. It also saves a lot of $

There are lots of nb All-in-one options out there, but they are pricier, and often the absorbency is outgrown well before baby fits into OS diapers. The P&Ns are a good in between option, but we had better luck with no leaks with prefolds.

I agree with all the PP about the ease of a snappi, but fitteds are great and if you get the kind with snaps then you don't need to use a snappi at all. You can practice all of this on a stuffed animal before your LO is born and once LO arrives you will get tons of practice on a baby that is constantly pooping. And on a side note, I love that you keep calling a snappi a "clippy." It makes me think of Microsoft's Clippy. "It looks like you're doing a diaper change. Can I help you with that?"
HA! I'm obviously new to this and all the jargon ;) Oh and I miss Clippy, I forgot all about him!

  • OKay, I'lll just have to practice and get DH to practice with prefolds and snappis.

How about the bamboo/microfiber inserts with the Tiny Diaper Covers?

  • You can't use microfiber with the tiny covers because microfiber can't go next to the skin. The tiny covers are just a cover, no pocket to place the MF inside. Bamboo inserts would be fine in a tiny cover. But you'll run into the same problem as not snappied prefolds...NB poo all over the cover.

I promise snappi'ing a prefold is easy. After a day of diapetring you'll have it down pat. And BTW once you start solids, trifolding in a cover is awesome!!
