Re: Experience with Amnio?

  • Welcome to the board and congrats on your pregnancy!!

I have no words of wisdom, as I have no experience with either CVS or Amnio.  Hopefully, your quad screen will come back ok and you won't need to consider them.

My daughter was born when I was 38 and my quad screen (and subsequent NT Scan) were within normal range.  With this one, I am 43 and again my NT Scan revealed no cause for concern.  However, I did have the NIPT MaterniT21 test (instead of the quad screen) and it came back normal too.  I will add that the NIPT tests are very expensive in America too, 2732USD to be exact.  I'm not sure if you have insurance or how your healthcare coverage works in your country, but maybe it's worth calling around to see if there are any options to help pay for it.

    Best of luck to you!!

I opted for a double amnio at 16 weeks (I'm having twins). The babies would not cooperate for the NT scan so we could not get any measurements. I have an extended infertility history and simply could not stop worrying that something was wrong even though everything was going fine. I lost 2 babies back to back before these twins and I needed to know one way or another. Screening odds weren't good enough for me as we had fallen on the bad side of stats for so long and I wanted a yes/no answer vs a ratio. My MFM supported my decision. He also told me he does amnios every single day and was very confident in his ability to do it. The risk factor is very small ---probably also depends on who is doing it and where. I am in a large urban city with a level 3 NICU. My experience was fine --procedure is fairly quick --about 15 mins ---and I rested the remainder of the day. I got rapid results the next day for chromosomes 13, 18 and 21 as well as sex. The rest was about 12 days. I've been a lot calmer with this pregnancy sinceI know both of my girls are chromosomally ok.

  • I truly didn't decide to go through with it until the night before. You can always book it and then cancel it. Most people thought I was crazy to do it but they haven't walked in my shoes. We didn't tell any one we did it until after the fact.

  • I've had an amnio but it was much later on and for lung maturity.  I can say that the procedure was quick and painless.  I would probably do the NT scan and bloodwork and see what those results are before considering an amnio but many people want more reassurance than the NT scan/bloodwork can give them.  If you decide to get one everything I've read says find someone who has done a ton of them.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
