Juice

How much are you giving LO? I don't have a milk drinker here. She refuses whole milk and isn't even drinking much pumped milk at daycare, although she nurses well at home. She will have some water, but loves juice, which I rarely give her. Im afraid of the sugar content. How much do you give?

Re: Juice

  • He's tried juice once, but it's definitely not a regular thing I'd give him. He nurses and gets water and that's all he really needs, IMO.

  • I was giving her juice everyday, probably about 8 oz. or so. At the 15m appointment the pedi suggested we stop as it isn't nutritionally valuable. Mine isn't much of a milk drinker either, but she will drink water. Now she gets juice only rarely as a treat.

  • He's tried some fresh juice, but we don't give it to him regularly. I have a milk-hater too. (maybe 4-5 oz of milk a day) He drinks mostly water . I'm not sure how much water he drinks, but it's not a ton. I watch for wet diapers as usual and also give high water content fruit a lot (like watermelon).

  • DS gets a 6oz juice box maybe once a week. It's hard to say no when big sister gets one (she gets really constipated).

  • We rarely ever give juice. DS drinks milk or water and he still nurses.
Maybe he will get juice once a month, if that. We don't like how much sugar is in juice so we even told the lady who watches him no juice.

  • We don't give juice either.

Have you tried 2% milk? (Assuming your pedi approves) we just switched, per pedis order, and LO seems to drink a lot more of it - I think because it's thinner.
  • Ok. I feel the same way about juice but wanted to make sure I wasn't being crazy. Seems like most of the kids at daycare drink juice.

  • I will top off her water cup with a splash of 100% orange juice in the morning (maybe 1 oz?) She's still nursing, so most of her liquid consumption is still BM.

  • I haven't given him juice yet but in the mornings, I make a smoothie (veggies and fruit) and I will give him some of that (not sure if that counts?). He nurses, drinks water and is adjusting to milk.

  • Only water and WCM here. Pedi said ok to give if she's constipated. DC asked if she can have it and I said no. They water down the kids juice to where it's mostly water with a splash of juice, but she loves her water so no need for it.

  • No juice here, I don't plan on introducing it for a while. Thankfully she loves water and milk so it's not a struggle.

  • Once in awhile I let her have a couple sips of juice in the mornings before daycare.  I usually offer milk first but sometimes she'd rather have the juice.  That is about all she gets, a few sips a few days a week.  The rest is milk and sometimes water.

No juice here either. They gave it to her once or twice at daycare and we asked them not to. I tried to give her some apple cider while we were at a cider mill on vacation and she hated it!
Apple cider is a lot different than apple juice.  It was probably too bitter/tart for her.

No juice here. Water or milk. It has no nutritional value and will all the sugar and high fructose corn syrup in everything else, I feel I need to limit exposure.

  • I give LO OJ with breakfast every morning.   Orange juice is nutritious and is a good source of vitamin C, folate and thiamine so I like LO to have it daily.   We also buy the calcium fortified kind so he gets a little extra calcium with it too.
Here is a good article by Dr. Sears on juice.  I think the long and short of it is that citrus is the best choice and they just need a small serving of it.  Some other good ones are grapefruit, and prune juice.

No juice here. The HV said it would be better for her eating not to give it because she would replace a snack with juice.

This is good! I haven't given LO orange juice yet, but I drink it fairly regularly in the morning, so I feel better about that now :)
