High platelets

Hi everyone,

I've never posted on here before but I just got a call from my doc's office. They said I had an elevated platelet count. I was wondering if anyone else has this and can tell me anything about it. I googled it and, of course, I get stressed out from all the bad info.

Re: High platelets

  • What did your dr say ? I had hellp syndrome with my son which causes low platelets . Either or can be dangerous and usually a result of a blood clotting type disorder in pregnancy . As long as your being monitored closely there's no need to panic . I'm sure they will also do another blood draw before deciding to put you on a medication like blood thinners . I'm currently on a low dose aspirin regimine . And just stay away from dr google !

  • This is every thing you need to know about a platelet count why it is done and what is normal, too high, or too low.

A platelet is also known as a thrombocyte. Thrombocytes are the smallest form of a blood cell and are the cells that help your blood clot when you are bleeding.
  • You should really set up a time to speak with your doctor though :) it will help to ease your nerves.
  • I know it's hard to stay away from, but dr. Google has never been particularly helpful for me. Every symptom I look up on Google usually ranges from totally benign to impending immediate death which just freaks me out. I suggest calling your doctor's office and speaking with a nurse to help explain it better to you and answer any questions. That might help ease some anxiety.

  • Thank you both so much! The doctor just said it was elevated but they would check it again at 20 weeks. I'm only 12 now, so I'm assuming it's not too elevated or they would want me to come in now??
  • @ducksie2012‌ did they tell you what your platelet count was? I am a nurse and also suffer from thrombocytopenia, low platelet count, and a slight elevation is no concern but just something to watch, also be aware that your count can vary greatly from draw to draw, do try not to worry unless the doctor says something is there to worry about.
