Cloth Diapering

Rash Help

Okay ladies, I have been fighting a rash for DD for a little while and decided it's time to enlist some help. Sometimes after a poopy diaper DD bottom get SUPER red. Normally I switch of a sposie with desitin and it's gone by the next change. Sometimes it comes back with the next cloth diaper if a don't use a flushable liner. Has anyone else run into this? Do you think it could be yeast? What do I do if it is? Thanks in advance!

Re: Rash Help

  • How quickly do you change after a poop?  Is it redness around the butthole (sorry) or on the cheeks?  Is it splotchy?  Bumpy?  Spotted?

  • I try to get them right away. I check often when I know it's typically time. I would say it's splotchy with some bumps. It's on both butthole out to the end of the cheek crease. Usually I can kick it with a liner and cream or a sposie and cream but if I just stick with cloth and cream I have a hard time getting rid of it.

  • Change as quickly as possible and pat his crack dry before putting on the next diaper. Dryness and a little air time will be better than creams every change

  • Also baking soda in the bath will help.

  • It sounds like he is pooping on a predicatable-ish schedule? Maybe add a CD safe cream like CJ's BUTTer or Coconut Oil to him before the poop diaper. Also, adding a little baking soda to the bath water has helped me.

  • Thanks ladies! She usually poops first thing with breakfast so I know to keep an eye out. How much baking soda do you use in the bath? As far as CD safe creams I have California Baby  and Grandma El's. Is CJ's that much better?

  • I use enough to make the water cloudy.  CJs is the only one I use, but I've heard lots of great things about Grandma El's.  It's a good barrier cream, so I would stick with that.  Just make sure you pat really dry BEFORE putting it on, otherwise you're sealing the moisture in.

If it appears after a poo and clears pretty quickly, it could be acidic poo. Little girl has this, I always give her a good slather of waxalene when I know she is due a dirty diaper. I also dry her very well then she gets a good coat of coconut oil, if she has any redness this takes care of it in one or two changes. Coconut oil is cd safe.

Edited to add.  The waxalene  prevents the poo from making too much contact with the skin, it's a good cd safe barrier "cream".
