Pregnant after a Loss

Early miscarriage?

I thought I was 7 weeks pregnant according to the first day of my last period (July 22, 14). At 5 weeks I hadn't got my period and got my first (2) positive at home test (Aug. 26th, 14)! Then on Sept 7 (about 6.5 wks) I started spotting and went in on the 9th. Everyone said spotting can be normal and the doc checked that my cervix was still closed which it was. They didn't want to do an ultrasound because they said it was too early but I convinced them too and sure enough, they couldn't see anything, not even a sac and assumed I had an early miscarriage. My first blood numbers were also only 116. I never passed any large clots and bleeding only lasted a few days (only when I wiped, didn't soak a pad) with no cramps. Does anyone have any experience with this? First pregnancy and want to start trying again but obviously have questions. Doc said I can start trying right away. Is it weird to have had a miscarriage and not know? Could I have passed it and not known?

  • I agree with @carlsonbaby2014‌. From what you've said it doesn't sound like anything has been confirmed. You can have spotting in early pregnancy and still be pregnant. And you can see nothing on an early u/s because it's too early and still have a healthy baby develop.

I would call your doctor and ask to have your blood levels checked again, twice this time 48 hours apart. If your numbers go up and double in that time, you are still pregnant. If they decrease or are less than 5, a miscarriage will be confirmed.

I'm sorry you are going though this. It can be really hard when you're not sure what's going on.

  • Thanks ladies! I am really confused too... With a first pregnancy you except it to go "by the book" and this has been anything but... The first nurse said it could be totally fine, the nurse practitioner said it's 50/50 and then the doc that did the ultrasound pointed heavy towards miscarriage. With all the info I had, some bleeding, low number and nothing on u/s, I guess I just figured that was more probable then being 2-3 weeks off on my dates. I know 100% when my last period started so I would have had to implant really late. Maybe that does happen?! Haha hoping they will draw blood tomorrow and be able to tell more!
  • I hope you can get some answers...FX that all is ok.

Just wanted to answer the bolded. It's not so important when your last period was; it's more important when you ovulated. Most ladies don't O on cd14. I myself have very irregular cycles and O'd on cd42 this cycle. Were you using OPKs or temping to know when you ovulated? Bc you could easily have ovulated later and thus implanted later, which would mean you aren't as far along as you think.

I second the sentiment for another beta draw to see what your levels are doing.

I wish you all the best.

  • I took my first HPT on Aug. 26 and got a positive in about 15 secs. I took another one the next day with a positive. Then I just took one on Sept. 8th (since I started bleeding and wanted to make sure) and still positive fast which makes sense if I got my blood drawn yesterday and it was 116. The doc said she wanted to see what my numbers came in at to see if she wanted to retest me in 48 hours. I haven't heard back yet but looked at my results online and that's how I know they are at 116. So three different tests, different brands and weeks apart with all positive results. Maybe it is possible that I ovulated late and am just really early. I wasn't doing anything to track as this was my first month "trying" and figured I would just go with it the first month and see what happens. Now I wish I did!!
  • I am currently 10 weeks.  When this pregnancy started I thought I was having a period but got a positive test. Turns out I had a small tear that was bleeding. (Also early bleeding can be implantation) I went to the doc right after the positive test they looked with u/s and saw nothing. But it was just too early to see anything. we did 3 blood draws and the hcg was doubling. 2 weeks later I went in for a u/s. Form my last period they guessed I was around 9 weeks. But I ovulated late so I was 6w4d.

I tell you all this just to say it is possible you might still be pregnant and as many others have said you should try to see if your doc will do more betas or at least check again with another pregnancy test in a week.  I'm not a doctor and I only speak from my experience but I do think you should try to monitor what is going on. Hope you find answers.
