Tear duct probe

We are having this done on October 2nd.  LO's left tear duct never came unblocked.  They tell me it's a quick, 5-min procedure but they still have to put him to sleep which makes me nervous.  Though thinking about not constantly cleaning gunk out of his eyelashes is exciting!

Anyone done this procedure before or have to do it with this LO?

Re: Tear duct probe

  • I had it done when I was a baby, I remember nothing ;)

Weird that they would put baby to sleep. #5 had his done. They strapped him to a board. The prep might take five minutes, but the procedure is more like 30 seconds. It's more traumatizing for the parent than the child.
Really, they didn't put him to sleep?  I assumed it was just so he didn't move.  They didn't offer me the option of not using anesthesia.
  • DS1 had this procedure at 9 months old. He was put under. He had to have both eyes probed. It was quick and it didn't seem to bother him.

They said they put him under so he wouldn't move. ((Hugs))

  • I'd have to ask my mom if they restrained me or put me under or what.  Granted, this was 33.5 years ago, and they may have had some crazy medieval way of doing it that's 1000x better now.

  • Hey girl!  Hope you are well!  I was sure we were headed for this and then we saw a different pedi in our practice and he showed me the "right" way to massage it.  It cleared in 2 days!  It's worth a try just in case!  Basically, I was only massaging right there in the corner.  I'd see gunk come out and think that was clearing it but in reality, you have to push it DOWN the side of the nose.  Just wanted to share b/c even after watching YouTube videos, I still wasn't doing it correctly.  He gave me this analogy... if you are trying to push sand down a beach and you just push it around in one spot, you won't make any progress.  But if you take a rake and push it down the shoreline, you'll move a pile of sand in no time!
