Bleeding nipples

LO is 4 months old, and breastfeeding has been going fairly smoothly until now.  Over the past two weeks, LO has been teething and distracted, so he's been a bit rough (popping on and off, doing the whole acrobatics routine).  Both my nipples are cracked and raw, and nursing is painful. I do think his latch is okay- it only hurts for the initial few seconds, and then it's fine.  I've been letting breastmilk dry on my nipples, then using some lanolin without much improvement.  I was toughing it out okay, but this last feeding was kind of a bloodbath.  LO had blood all over his shirt, hands, face.  He also had blood in his spit up last night, and dark digested blood in his diaper this morning.  So clearly I'm bleeding during nursing more than I thought.  I'm going to call the lactation consultant this morning, but my thought is that I'm going to have to pump for a few days to let things heal.  Has anyone been through something similar?  Do you have any words of advice?

Re: Bleeding nipples

  • Try Silverette silvere cups! They healed my cracks in 48 hours and most important they are supposed to prevent the infection that can happen whenthe bacterias from the baby's mouth get inside the bleeding cuts! Good luck!
