Reflux Check-In (9/9)

This is a weekly check-in for May mamas of LOs with reflux. Returning or new to the Check-In, we'd love to hear from you!

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since last Check-In?

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

4 - How is the weather where you live?  Has fall hit early or is summer still hanging around?

Re: Reflux Check-In (9/9)

  • 1 - Emily will be 16 weeks on Thursday; she's been on meds since 8.5 weeks (first Zantac, now Prevacid compound).  We've also been seeing a chiropractor 2x weekly since 12.5 weeks.

2 - I am losing hope that the chiropractic visits are going to do anything to help her.  We've already had 6 visits and I honestly don't see much of a difference.  Some days she does well, but then other days she is spitting up and gagging and shooting puke out of her nose.  It's tough.  I don't want to jinx it, but over the past week I have noticed her doing bigger/better burps after feeding, many of which are NOT accompanied by shooting puke.  Not sure if that's a good sign or neutral?

3 - Any other reflux mamas out there BFing and have OALD/oversupply?  I've been battling this off and on, and I have to wonder whether that is at root the cause of her reflux.  It certainly doesn't help things, I know.

4 - I live in NYC area and today was CHILLY!  I made the mistake of wearing shorts and a t-shirt this morning when I ran out to get DD's Prevacid refill and it was cold!  I then changed into capris and during our afternoon walk I wore a SWEATSHIRT!  What the heck, Mother Nature???  I am so NOT ready for summer to exit stage left!

  • 1. LO will be 4 months on the 20th... she has bern on medicine for awhile. She started on Zantac and has been on Prevacid for 2 weeks now with no change, except spitting up more. Tomorrow is her last day on Prevacid and I will probably go back to Zantac since I have a lot of that left.

    2. DD is not doing much better. When will this end? :(

    3. Did anyone else notice an increase in spit up with Prevacid?

    4. The weather was nice here today in Michigan! I fell down my stairs earlier this evening and i'm sore :(

4 months old today!! I think we started around 6 weeks.

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since last Check-In?

The past two weeks he has had ups and downs. He was spitting up half of every feed and ended up losing 3 oz in a week. Ped suggested keeping his meds and adding rice cereal to his BM bottles. We add 2 tsp to a 4-5 oz bottle, or I BF him one feed bottle the next--- it's made a world of difference. No hours of fussiness in the evening And only wet burps-- no more projectile oz of milk after every feed.

I was very hesitant about rice cereal before 6 months, but I guess proof is in the pudding and I can't beat myself up over it. My kid feels better and that is what matters most to me.

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

    No tips.

4 - How is the weather where you live? Has fall hit early or is summer still hanging around?

It's bipolar--- summer one day, fall the next. I love fall-- can't wait for it to be here full time!

I have oald and oversupply. I don't think it makes much difference for my guy to be honest. Even with paced feeds, pumping before putting him on, and bottling--- I never saw much of an improvement.

I just take it as a blessing that we have a TON of milk in the freezer and have donated to those in need, and can likely wean early-ish to start trying for LO #2

bridetobe9132013 -- interesting that you're asking about increased spit-up on Prevacid.  To be honest, I don't know if it's increased but it's certainly still a lot, if not more.  I am so frustrated with these meds.  My DH made an appt with the pedi for next week to see if we should take Emily off the meds bc she's still spitting up a lot, gagging, choking and so we doesn't think the potential adverse affects from the meds are worthwhile.  So sorry that you fell down the stairs... that stinks!!!  Feel better!!!

@mrsbtobe20122 -- You're totally right.... LO feeling better is what's important and you're a good mama for trying everything you can to make that happen!!  :)  I have to disagree with you on the seasons though... I hate fall bc that means winter is right around the corner.  ;)  I want it to be summer forever!!!!  I also feel blessed that I have enough milk for my LO -- that is the right way to think of it I think.  I just hope that the overabundance isn't adding to her issues...
  • I put DD back on Zantac because the prevacid ran out and did nothing to help. I think the zantac is helping again. She seems better on it but im slowly weaning it to see if cereal is helping.
  • @anniemore im going to try filtered water... thanks for sharing and im glad your lo is feeling better! :)
  • @bridetobe9132013 -- Glad to hear the Zantac seems to be helping your LO!

@anniemore -- So glad to hear your LO is doing well, and that you found the secret to help him!!
