Mirena users come on in

Tell me about any side effects you have experienced? I think a lot of my recent issues are from the iud but I am curious to hear about others experiences. Thanks!

Re: Mirena users come on in

  • I've had it almost a year. Haven't had one actual period...just some bloating and cramping once a month. Normal libido reducing side effect for me, but that's all BC in my case. Otherwise happiest I've ever been on BC
  • Loading the player...
  • Spotting More of a sex drive that with the pill but less than without any bc Boobs are not bigger (calling this a side effect because damn I could use help in that area) I think I'm losing more hair than usual.
  • Sorry. The bump ate my formatting!
  • First time with it had spotting every 2 weeks after post insertion bleeding stopped. This time I have had none except for the no periods at all but I don't see that as an issue.
  • I'm on my second one. No problems with either. My period is just now returning since I stopped nursing the twins. I get about a half day of light spotting (no tampon needed) every 26-29 days.

I do get hormonal/emotional/I feel crazy shifts, though. I feel like I always have, so I can't blame the mirena.

  • I had crazy mood swings on mine but looking back at the time In my life, there's a chance that could have been attributed to something else. I opted for paraguard this time, just in case.

  • I had a chronically low and apathetic mood- like I just couldn't ever be happy OR really sad about anything. I was snappish and had zero sex drive. DH said I seemed constantly on edge.

I had it for 5 years between DS and DD. I didn't have any symptoms other than low sex drive. I had my period every month, just lighter.

ETA: because I made it sound like I bled every day for 5 years.
  • I've had mine for almost 2 years. I cramped and bled off and on for about 4-6 weeks after insertion. I get light spotting every 6 weeks or so and it lasts around 3 days. It's really hard to know what the side effects could be vs. just normal post pardum/parenting (as in, harder to lose weight, being more tired than I used to be, feeling ovulation from my left ovary). I really like my Mirena and will likely have another one put in after the 5 years is up.
  • I had mine for about 10 1/2 months and then it dislodged.  I'm in the minority, but it was more of a PITA to me.  I bled for a long time after insertion and it did not affect my menses.  Still love that word

  • I got it about 7 weeks ago and I have been bleeding/spotting ever since. I don't have much of a sex drive but I also have a 6 month old who doesn't sleep so I'm not sure that I can blame the Mirena. No other side effects that I've noticed.

depression.  I'm guessing I got cysts from it.  For a few months 3/4 the way through my cycle I would get excruciating pain right around one of my ovaries.  It varied which side and lasted a day or two and then would go away.

I bled for 6 months.  I had 3 "periods" in the month of Feb alone (which was 5 months after insertion).  And before this I barely had a period.  It's still heavier than pre Mirena.  I've had it for almost a year now.

Headaches, not necessarily migraines but I rarely had headaches.  Even still on Mirena if I get a headache it's pretty bad and tylenol/advil won't touch it.  Before I would get a mild headache rarely and tylenol would cure it.

However, I have like zero cramping with AF.  It sucks because I have no warning signs that it's coming.  But, I don't have to pop Advil the first day anymore.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • I bled for 5 months, had cluster headaches and a 25lb weight gain.  I completely lost my sex drive and was miserable.  I was put on the mini pill at the 5 month mark to stop my bleeding, but I only kept it in another 2 months before I could convince my doctor to take it out.  It also partially embedded in my uterine wall.  Luckily it had no effect on my fertility and I was able to get pregnant again a few months after getting rid of it.

  • @FalconCrest‌ sorry you went through that. I'm experiencing major mood swings, depression, 15lb weight gain in 6 weeks, fatigue, bloated stomach, terrible acne including the first cyst I've had since I was a teenager. I've also lost my sex drive and have vaginal dryness and a YI twice in 8 weeks (I never get them). Now, I've started getting numbness in my hands at night and hip pain which I had when pregnant. I had my thyroid tested and it was fine. No other issues and other than being tired from the kids keeping me up I have no explanation for all these crazy symptoms.

    Wait, what?
My doctor kept trying to convince me to wait it out, that I would eventually love it.  I no longer see that doctor.

  • Weight gain, joint pain, lethargy, headaches.  I hated Mirena.  All of these problems went away within a week of removal.
