Breastfed Baby wont take bottle

My 2.5 month old will not take a bottle at all! We have been trying several times a week for several hours a day. She chews on the bottle, screams and eventually falls asleep until I feed her.  Any tips? I just ordered this bottle https://www.diapers.com/p/adiri-nxgen-newborn-nurser-pink-5-5-oz-1000210 and it is kind of my last resort. I have to go back to work and will be gone from baby for 13.5 hours a couple days a week so there is no way she will be able to wait. I never had this problem with my first one. Any ideas are appreciated!

Re: Breastfed Baby wont take bottle

  • This is so hard. I struggled with this with my now toddler. I just tried different brands and had other people offer her the bottle. She never took one from me. Good luck!
  • I asked this a few weeks ago:  https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/83608519#Comment_83608519 and got lots of helpful comments.  My DD is now taking the bottle fine (I've been back at work for 4.5 weeks now).  What seemed to make the biggest difference was making sure the milk was very warm (DH would measure the temperature to make sure it was at least 97 degrees before he gave it to her) and a whole lot of time and patience.  My pediatrician assured me that not eating while I was at work wouldn't hurt her, she would eat if she was hungry enough.  What she ended up doing for a few days was reverse cycling - where she nursed extra at night to make up for what she didn't eat during the day.  It wasn't fun, but it was only temporary. Good luck!

  • Mine won't take a bottle either. We are trying to just go straight to a sippy cup after trying several brands. He's only ever choked down 1/2 an ounce.
  • I haven't had trouble but the Baby Whisperer suggests using a nipple that most closely resembles yours. I introduced the Tommee Tippee first and he's loved it. Hates the Dr. Brown.
  • He did take a bottle at about 4 weeks, then we didn't give him one again until about 8 weeks and he hasn't taken one since (now 13 weeks). I'll be following along for tips myself.

  • I had the same problem - she took the bottle easily early on (tommy tippee) but when we tried to give it to her at 8-9 weeks she wouldn't have it. We tried a couple bottles, and we've had success now with the mam. I looked for the nipple that most looked like mine after she breastfed. The other big thing was that I couldn't be in the same room when she was being given the bottle, out of the house completely was even better.
  • It took us 3 different kinds until we found that he will ONLY take tommee tippee. Hugs, mama. Patience and like others said. If baby is hungry, baby will eat. Good luck!

  • Also have this issue .. My LO is 3 months and started refusing a bottle around 6 wks. We haven't been trying much lately but I'm returning to work next month so extremely anxious about it as well. I want to try the intermittent thing a previous poster said - here's a link to an article :

Also have smelled stored milk? Does it smell fresh. If not it could be high lipase issue; you may need to scald the milk before storage.

  • We are using The First Years Breastflow bottles. I bought them from Amazon. I started using them at the suggestion of am LC as I was having trouble with my son latching and it mimicked the breast as well as a bottle could. It worked for well for us. Hope he takes to the bottle soon.
  • We tried multiple bottles with LO and she hated all of them. We had to dropper feed her for 2 days. We would offer a bottle first and she'd refuse then we'd dropper feed her. After 2 days she took a bottle. We are currently using Doctor Browns wide neck bottles.
  • I have been going through the same thing with my 3 month old. The only way she will take a bottle is if I distract her by walking around while trying to give her the bottle. Going outside so she can look at the trees works every time. I'm on day 5 of bottle feeds during the daytime only and it is getting easier each time. Good luck.
  • I'm struggling with the bottle as well :( the amount of money spent trying to find the right bottle is gross! She was doing wonderful with similac sensitive and dr. Browns bottles and just two weeks ago decided no more. I feel so selfish for wanting to stop b feeding but I want to so bad. I just bought a mam bottle it has a flatter nipple and gentalease formula she drank 2 ounces and then decided to have a melt down. Idk what to do cause I feel like I, gonna have a melt down :(
  • I'm still ebf and LO did well taking bottles with slow flow nipple- platex air vente but then refused. We had to go to the medium flow nipple.
