Re: PSA: Enterovirus D68

I've been reading about this and it's super scary. I kind of want to keep my LOs in a bubble! DS1 starts school next week and last year he caught HFM and all kinds of colds within the first month of starting.

does anyone live in the area where this break out is occurring?

Ugh, I am going to have to keep mine in a bubble. I hope none of our babies get this.

Actually dealing with this right now. R has had this "cold" now for weeks. Went to the doctor for his 15 month and brought it up. The doctor said a lot of kids get these late summer colds. All the kids in his class had it. Everyone is actually starting to feel better but now they're concerned they have/had it. There have been confirmed cases by me. Right now waiting on some other kids to get tested to see if it is infact that or another virus. We were assured that unless they have other health complications. Most people get over it like any other virus. Everyone is on the mend so at least that is a plus.

Yep, this is literally my worst nightmare right now. With Emmett's hospitalization last year, and unofficial diagnosis of viral induced asthma, I'm scared as hell. There are outbreaks about an hour away from us, which is horrible news. At least for right now, I'm keeping him away from all public places. I can't do anything about daycare (which luckily is only 3 kids), but I'm doing everything I can on my end to keep him from getting it. I've also started to get into essential oils, so I'm hoping those can help boost his immune system.

Like all if you this has me very nervous. DD was so so much last Fall and Winter, some of you may recall that she was hospitalized for RSV and Phnemonia last year - so scary. She has a tendency to pick up these respitory infections very quickly and just yesterday she started coughing quite a bit. I've been monitoring her breathing and thankfully that seems good. Here's hoping she doesn't get worse. I wanted everyone to be in the loop as I know we have people from all over on here.

So far no news of this being around here but we all know how that goes. I'll be bringing it up at daycare drop off in Thursday...just so that they're aware of it in case it hasn't come up. Never hurts to alert them about these things.

Encourage your kids to cough. Try to fake cough and see if they will mimic you. I have taught Natalie how to do it. It will help mobilize and clear some of the secretions down there. Also, when they do cough on their own pat their back.

yah so, there's hundreds (yep hundreds) of cases here in CO which scare the shit outta me. S has been sick on and off with a nasty cough on and off for the last 3 months it seems like, and nothing we do clears it up completely. We think she might have asthma which sucks balls. Because of the crazy outbreak here, this is what they've said about it, and what to do if you think your kid might be sick with Enterovirus.

Because it's a virus, there's no real "preventative" against it other than the washing hands all the time, don't kiss, share things with someone who is sick, etc etc. Also, because it's a virus, there's no real medications to clear it up either. This starts out looking like the normal cold, but quickly worsens to the point where they seem to have difficulty breathing. If that happens, take them straight to urgent care/ER. All the hospital can really do is keep them ventilated and help them breathe. The bright side of this is that there is a very low fatality rate as long as people are vigilant.

"Very low fatality rate" is the bright side. Eeeek. I'd love to here "no fatality rate".

Yea....my 13 yo son has this, and he has asthma! We are in a state with the virus, and he probably picked it up at school. It totally sucks because I know LO has picked it up from him already, but she is just coughing, runny nose, etc. Her breathing seems OK so far. I took DS to the doctor Monday first apt I could get, and the doctor was annoyed that I let it get so bad before bringing him in. He didn't believe us that he had just started having symptoms on Thursday, since his lungs "were a mess" according to him. This virus moves really quickly through your system. He had double breathing treatments in the office, was put on prednisone, and goes back tomorrow for a follow up. We've been religious about his breathing treatments every 4 hours, and the doctor told us to beat his back after each treatment to try and clear it. He does seem to be turning the corner, and I'm going to have the doctor listen to LO when we are there tomorrow.  Cold and flu season sucks!

Well, I ended up taking LO into the pedi first thing this morning, as she was also wheezing. They did a breathing treatment with her then, and checked her again when I brought my son back for his recheck. His lungs really haven't cleared very much at all.....so we left being told to continue the breathing treatments for both kids every 4-6 hours and go to the emergency room if they get worse.
