Crib Mattresses - Recommendations?

I'm finding the crib mattress search to be a tough one - Cribs were somewhat easier because I can narrow by the style I like, but I have no idea what to do with the mattress. What did you choose, and why?

Re: Crib Mattresses - Recommendations?

  • I chose a mid priced sealy at Sears. I went more on what I could get within my budget. I'm not much help :)

  • I got the walmart one for $35 for my first dd. I was surprised at how nice it was, actually. It fit my crib perfectly and it's still in good shape after three years of nightly use (our crib turns into a toddler bed).

  • I was always told to get a firm mattress, so that's what we got for DS. I don't remember what brand, but I know we got it from BRU.

  • Thanks all for your help!
  • We registered for/will buy the Kolcraft mattress with 150 springs. We chose it because we really wanted something that was made without flame retardants (PBDEs). This one isn't as "clean" as some of the organic options, but they're over our budget. This seemed like an decent alternative.

  • our "crib" is a california king... I recommend
  • @Stephij1 what is the "walmart one"? walmart has a bunch of crib mattresses. I actually bought one there awhile back and it sucked big time. it was basically just a big piece of foam. I went back there and got a much better one for a little more money.

All crib mattresses are not created equal. Just figure out what you can afford and go from there.

Yikes! Yeah, that's definitely not the one we got. I don't remember the brand name, but it was whatever off brand walmart had for their matress.

ETA: I just checked and it's a Kolcraft Pediatric.

  • We got the Sealy Soybean Foam Core mattress. We've been happy with it, and I'll probably get the same thing for this lo.

  • I got this one from Amazon

Good price, feels firm but not hard, and fits crib well. No complaints and we've had it over a year. Baby #2 will use it too since we got a slightly softer one for DD's toddler bed (whenever the stars align for me to transfer her haha).

  • We got the sealy soybean foam core one last time and it has been just fine.plan to use it for #2. As long as the mattress fits in the crib properly I think you're probably fine. I would air out new mattresses and furniture for a while before the baby is born to reduce off gas emissions which happen from virtually everything.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I was looking at the safety 1st ones online and they did look good.
I also heard of a US company called lullaby earth. Super natural crunchy one, which I normally don't really worry about, but like the idea of for the baby.

Sounds like we got the same one. We bought ours from amazon, and it appears that you can still buy it there slightly cheaper than from other retail outlets. It's nice and firm, and it fit our standard crib perfectly. It has a vinyl-laminate outer layer, rather than a plush outer layer, so it was good for any diaper leaks, etc (completely waterproof, so no worry about mattress getting stained with pee, etc).

I let DH do all the research on the crib mattress before, so forgive me if I get some of this wrong. I think he said that he preferred this one because it was free of most chemicals. The only part that is non-organic was the vinyl-laminate cover. It also looks like you can buy an upgraded version of this mattress with an organic cotton cover for a few more bucks.

We bought it back in 2011, and we plan on using it again for this one.

  • We have a Colgate foam matress and LOVE it. It's so much lighter than coil mattresses, which makes changing the sheets much easier. We've had ours for 8 years now and it's still like new.
