Trouble TTC

Another Adderall Question?

I've been going back and forth with whether I should take Adderall while TTC. When I first started TTC I went off of it, I struggled at work and in general. Then I did some research, as well as asked my PCP, OB and RE. All pretty much said I can take it until I become pregnant. So a couple of weeks ago I started taking it again, I felt so much better. Then I went for BW and my Thyroid was elevated again, more than it was initially. I worry that the Adderall could have caused the rise in my Thyroid level. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, I read something that said it could affect your hormone levels. I'm going to bring it up to my new RE tomorrow, but thought maybe someone here can give me some advice.

Re: Another Adderall Question?

  • Thanks. I'm thinking of changing to the evening as well. I wonder if it's ok to take it as I go to bed, which is usually around 11:00. I rarely eat anything after dinner. I have to take the Adderall early in the morning or I have trouble sleeping at night. I think if anything is affecting my Thyroid levels it's taking the Adderall and the Synthroid together. Maybe switching to Adderall & vitamins in the morning, then Synthroid at night. I'm going to run it by my doctor today, I'll let you know what he says.

  • I spoke with my doctor. She said not to take the Synthroid at night, as it could keep me from sleeping and I should not be taking the Adderall and Synthroid together. She told me to take the Synthroid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, then 45 minutes later take the Adderall. She said the Adderall will not affect my Thyroid level, but taking the two medications at the same time or too close together can affect the way my body absorbs the Synthroid, which is what I suspected and what @lhbphd‌ said. Didn't realize Synthroid can keep you awake at night.

  • I don't get it. I've been doing research and nothing says that taking Synthroid at night will keep you awake. In fact many studies show it's a better time to take it. I think the info my Re nurse gave me was incorrect. I think she misunderstood me and thought I was talking about taking the Adderall at night. She was in a rush on the phone. This is why I'm switching REs.

  • Synthroid can definitely be taken at night. While most Doctors will still recommend in AM some endocrinologists will specifically recommend at night, that way it has several hours with an empty stomach while you're sleeping. I have heard it make some people nauseous or gives them stomach upset, but that side effect will be person specific.
Ideally you would be able to do the Synthroid at night (at least 2 hours after your last food or other medication), that way you can wake up in the AM with no concerns on when to eat or when to take your Adderall. If your levels are still off then your doc should be able to titrate your Synthroid dose to where your thyroid level is proper while on the Adderall. Good luck!

  • I'm convinced the nurse gave me the wrong information. I think she thought I asked about taking the Adderall at night. This is why I'm in the process of switching REs. It's not that she doesn't know what she's talking about, she's always in a rush. I can't wait to officially be done with this RE office, right now I'm kinda in between. I'm in the 2ww now so I think I'll just hold off and ask my new RE who's opinion I trust way more. I've done a ton of research, as long as you have an empty stomach there's no reason why you can't take Synthroid at night. You guys are more helpful than my doctors office. ;)
