Pregnant after a Loss

First Trimester Check-in (9/8)

Re: First Trimester Check-in (9/8)

  • I am sorry that both your mom and your mother in laws are doing it! That is awful. My sister only rubs my belly for a second or two. I would flip shit on my mom for rubbing my belly for so long in public. I am sorry that you are dealing with it!

Your OB sounds awesome! I'm glad she got back to you so quickly and that it seems like everything is ok.  I am glad that your a/s is Monday -- how exciting. I am sorry that you have had to wait so long between appointments, but glad that yours is almost here.

    EDD/Week/Fruit:
February 9, 18 weeks 3 days, two sweet potatoes!

    Worries (rational or irrational):
I've had a tight pressure in my very low abdomen the last few days and that of course makes me worry.  I hear both babies on the doppler, but still, PGAL brain is so tough.  I am hoping it is because I'm not drinking enough or being too active or something small like that.  I put a call into my doctor's nurse this morning, just in case, but I'm sure it's nothing.  I was told by my F15 ladies that it could be BH this early, but being a FTM I have no clue what I'm feeling for pete's sake.
UPDATE while I was typing:  She called me back (within 20 min of my message - I LOVE my OB) and told me that what I am feeling is 100% normal.  It is a combination typically of RLP and other stretching and pressure.  She recommended just what I assumed, more water and lots of rest whenever I can.  Any change in discharge (turning more to leakage) or of course blood or cramping and I am to call them back.

    Appointments scheduled:
My anatomy scan is Monday!  I can't wait!  This has been the longest stretch of time between appointments for me (4 weeks) and it has been miserable.

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates:
I don't recall the exact day, but 4 years ago, the week of our 1st anniversary, I got my first BFP.  That is next week.  Oddly enough, I don't think about it as much anymore.  That makes me feel a bit guilty, but I think we all grieve differently.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
Weird.  All I can say is weird.  DH says that if I say something is weird one more time......
The RLP, the exhaustion, the shortness of breath when all I did was windex the front door windows.....WEIRD what the body can do!

@kefttsc I read your post about people touching your belly. My sister does that to me. She is near about the only person I would let get away with that. I'm pretty frightening looking so I haven't had a stranger do it this pregnancy or last. Have you decided the best way to handle it?
I'm really honestly disheartened by it.  The more I think about it, the more I really feel disrepected.  If a stranger touches it, they don't know me and how I feel about it.  YES, I will HATE it, but that person doesn't know my wishes.  My own family DOES, yet they ignore it.  I am about ready to have DH handle his mother and I will handle mine.  It literally makes me want to cry that they KNOW how I feel and continue to think it's funny to do it all the time.  I'm not talking they touch it.  I'm talking RUB it all over for minutes at a time.  They choose to do it when we are places where I can't comment.  Church this weekend, lunch in public, etc.  I'm so angry about it.  I know this seems like an overreaction, but it literally makes me not want to be around them and makes my skin crawl.
Oh, and my sister KNOWS she would draw back a nub if she touched it, so she'd never :)

  • I would love to join this Check-In!  Hi Ladies!!!

    EDD/Week/Fruit-
May 10th (Mother's Day!!) I am just over 5 weeks which would make my LO an Apple Seed!  Another site I looked at says sesame seed and a third says orange seed which are all different in size.  I thought that was interesting.

Worries (rational or irrational) - I worry a lot...and I try not to so I can enjoy it since this will likely be our third and final baby.  I worry when I don't feel nauseous.  I worry when I feel slight cramping.  I worry when I don't eat and have no appetite and then I worry when I have eaten too much and maybe not a mix of the right things.  I worry when I stretch the wrong way and feel a pulling sensation.

Appointments scheduled- OB wants to see me earlier than they normally do given my history so I am going next week on Sept. 17th.  I will be just over 6 weeks and they will do an U/S

Upcoming milestones/Loss dates- I passed the milestones of my 2 Chemical Pregnancies.  The first was 4w4d and the second was 4w.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?  Surprising- That even though I have experienced this before, it all feels new.  Worst- The worrying and knowing that I will continue to worry until I have a baby in my arms...and I will still worry then, but for different reasons. Best- Hope for this to be our rainbow.

Worries (rational or irrational) No worries this week, since I made it past my loss milestone I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. MH even mentioned on Saturday night that I seem to be much more excited all of a sudden. Of course I didn't mention to him that Friday was our loss milestone since it was his birthday...Ready to see a heartbeat and my baby

Appointments scheduled    One week until my first US, scheduled for 8:30am so hopefully when I check in next week I will have good news.
Upcoming milestones/Loss dates:    Just passed it on Friday!!!

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?     I am suprised how relaxed I have been since passing my milestone, while I am a bit anxious about the heartbeat, I am so happy that I feel like crying, for like the 5th time this morning... The worst was the anxiety of losing the baby and having to lie to people when they tell me we should get on it, we are newlyweds, I don't think I need people to tell me to get on it... The best thing has been my husband's reactions to everything. He is so excited and dying to tell people, he likes to talk to baby and insists he can hear 'him' even though he thinks it is a girl talking...

I am so happy that you feel so much better following your loss milestone. That is so awesome that you are relaxing!!!  Only one week until your first u/s? I hope that time flies by and your u/s is here before you know it! Definitely let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the check-in @footprint! I hope you're having a good week. I'm doing OK with the EDD coming up on Friday. I was feeling a little down yesterday, but trying to focus on the good things to come. As of right now H and I just plan to have a quiet night at home. He doesn't want to focus too much on it, but also can't believe how fast the time has gone. I truly appreciate the T&Ps!

    EDD/Week/Fruit
    2/28/15:15w3d navel orange

    Worries (rational or irrational)
I don't think the fear will every really go away (I actually had an awful dream about it the other night), but for the most part I'm feeling much more excited and postivie.

Appointments scheduled: Next Monday, Sept. 15th for a check-up.

Upcoming milestones/Loss dates: Just EDD coming up on Friday. So glad that the rest of the milestones from here on out will be happy ones!

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
It's been crazy how much people want to do things for me. It's a very nice sentiment, but I can definitely carry things and stand for extended periods of time. I'm just pregnant! The worst is definitely the PGAL brain. I just want to enjoy this pregnancy! A close second was the morning sickness. I mean, it definitely helped ease my mind but man there were some rough weeks. The best (so far) was seeing LO moving at the NT Scan. It melted my heart.
I hope that Friday isn't too hard for you and your H. We will be thinking of you and sending positive vibes.  I am happy that time has moved quickly this pregnancy for you! Time has just dragged for me, but it's all good!

  • @footprint thanks for being a rock star and hosting thread! My PGAL brain must be a little better as I did order my Motherhood stuff which includes a swimsuit for a babymoon DH is taking me on. All my appointments have been great (thank you God/knock on wood).
     EDD/Week/Fruit
Mar 30/11/lime although I have been measuring ahead the last few weeks! Worries (rational or irrational)
worry about "jinxing" it a lot. Worry about losing baby. Worry about eating right. Worry if baby will be healthy. Appointments scheduled My ob/gyn is still having me in weekly to monitor me and make sure everything's okay due to my history. This stops soon though.
     Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
All behind me actually. I have lost enough pregnancies though that I have loss dates every few months at least. Sometimes I can't even remember dates though because I block a lot of it (I don't have them in my signature either obviously). I have never had hopeful news or made it this far though! It's pretty surreal.
QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
Surprising would be how calm I am based on my history. I actually don't stress as much we I did when going through IVF for example. Although this was actually a surprise/natural bfp! We weren't trying AT ALL! The best part of it is how happy my DH is...he is over the moon. The worst part is worrying that we won't get to adopt for awhile now. I really want to adopt now! Adoption is super on my heart and I don't want the agency to turn us away due to our pg (we haven't told them yet).
I am so sorry that you have had so many losses. That has to be hard. I am so, so happy that you have made it this far! You must be ecstatic!  Where are you going on your babymoon? Can they deny an adoption because you are pregnant? That seems, to me, illegal. But it should be said that sometimes, I am dim.

    Worries (rational or irrational)
Good things first: @footprint, thanks for asking! My ultrasound at 12 weeks was amazing! In prior ultrasounds there was only a little bit of limb movement that we could see. In this one, the baby was clearly awake and playing around. He/she was actually jumping off one side of the sac, would hit its head hit the other side of the sac, slide down to starting position, and jump again. It was so cute. The baby was also playing with its hands and I think sucking on its thumb. So that made me feel a lot better. Now it's going to be a long wait until my next ultrasound which is the anatomy scan, but I'm feeling pretty positive about the pregnancy overall.

    Appointments scheduled
I have an OB appointment on September 26. We won't have an ultrasound, but will get to hear the heartbeat with the Doppler. I'll be 15 weeks and assuming that appointment goes well, we will tell more people about the pregnancy.

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
    None in the near future.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
I think the most surprising thing has been what little energy I have. It's really sad. The worst thing has probably been brief nausea for a few weeks and my crazy cravings (almost always sugary carbs). I used to eat pretty healthy before pregnancy and tried to stay away from processed foods and sugars so it's weird to be wanting these things so much. The best thing has been the happiness my husband and I have had at each ultrasound. It seems like a miracle to have our beloved little child growing inside me.
I can totally picture an ultrasound screen with a baby "bouncing off the walls." That sounds absolutely adorable and absolutely amazing to see.I like what you said about the happiness you and your H share at the u/s.  What a happy check-in this week! Yay!

  • Hi @footprint, thanks for the check in. We had our 8 week 3 day ultrasound today and I was soo nervous because I still have had NO symptoms, but the doctor says everything is okay. We saw the heartbeat is 187-I feel that may be a little high and something may be wrong, but he didn't seem to be worried?

we are further along then we were when we m/c last time so that is a little relief

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
for me the surprising thing is believing there is a beating heart inside me when I don't feel pregnant at all. the worst thing is the intense fear that I will m/c again
I always feel like I am waiting to be led to the electric chair when I am waiting for my u/s. I am just awash in pure terror. I get a little nervous for the days leading up to my u/s, but the day of, I am a mess.  Yay for seeing your bean and his/her heartbeat! That is so exciting. If your doctor isn't worried about the baby's heart rate, I wouldn't be either.

  • @BananaBoat05 Only one week until your u/s? How are you holding up? How are you doing with your approaching EDD? Have you planned anything for that day?

Thanks for the check in @footprint and sorry I'm a day late.  My u/s is next Monday so I'm praying to give you all a positive update.  Friday is my second angel's EDD and I am really struggling with it.  I have to work Friday and it's p/t conferences so it will be a long day.  I haven't planned anything special but I'm thinking maybe releasing a balloon in Jesse's honor might be a good way to remember him/her.

    EDD/Week/Fruit
    4/24/15 - 7w4d - blueberry

    Worries (rational or irrational)
I had an evening of cramping and diarrhea on Saturday and I was convinced it was the start of a m/c, just like with my loss.  My symptoms have decreased a bit so I'm a total mess.  I'm really struggling lately.  With my upcoming u/s and loss EDD, it's just a really tough week.

    Appointments scheduled
    Monday - first u/s at 8w3d

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
Second angel's EDD is this Friday 9/12/14

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
Most surprising - I have a lot of nausea this pregnancy, which I've never had with my previous 3 pregnancies
Worst thing - PgAL fears consuming me
Best thing - anticipation and hope for the future with two children

I am sorry. It sounds like between your EDD approaching, your symptoms decreasing, and being sick over the weekend, you have the perfect storm of unpleasantness. I hope that Friday isn't too bad for you and that keeping busy will help you get through it.  I'll be sending T&Ps and positive vibes on Friday.

@footprint I had an u/s just to check up. Baby was sucking it's thumb and stretched out those little legs for us to see! I took a video of the u/s to watch when I start getting panicky... As far as announcing, it makes me freak out. It's "easy" to tell people, but then after I'm like "oh no, now if something bad happens that's one more person I have to tell bad news to"

    EDD/Week/Fruit 3.14.15/13w3d/peach?

Worries (rational or irrational) I'm better today, after seeing our little one. However, my OB kind of freaked me out. I have a didelphic uterus (link to pic), so that comes with some risks. He told me that another OB in the clinic just had a woman with my same issue deliver at 28 weeks, BUT that since I've gone full term before he's not too worried about me, but I have to see a specialist just in case. So today went from nervous to calm to nervous again.

Appointments scheduled Cervix check in 3 weeks, and then A/S 3 weeks after that.

Upcoming milestones/Loss dates I'm past most of them. Actually in my second trimester now, so this will be my last "first trimester" check in... :(

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing? Surprising - how hard it is for me to get excited because deep down I'm still scared to death of another loss. Worst thing has been the nausea and the return of back pain (I had major instability in my back, a year of solid chiropractic work was working great to resolve it, but now pregnancy hormones are relaxing my ligaments and such, so the instability is back and it hurts like hell). Best thing is being able to share this with my husband and our kids.
I wish I had a picture of my uterus. Yours is pretty. I'm kidding. I am sorry that you have increased risks because of it, but i am glad they are more positive because you have carried to term.  In three weeks, how will they do the cervix check? I'm sorry that it is one more thing for you to worry about and that sucks.

I'm sorry about your back. Back issues just seem so awful to me. I hope that you are able to get it fixed (if that is even possible). Are you continuing to see a chiropractor throughout your pregnancy? Maybe you can get an RX for physical therapy?

Congrats on your positive and welcome to first trimester check-in!  This is my third pregnancy and it totally feels so new and different than my other ones, which is weird.

There really doesn't seem like there is any way around being nervous. Nervous about absolutely everything! Everyone on here worries a lot about things that women who haven't had losses have probably never dreamed of worrying about. For me, it's about finding a balance between feeling the hope and joy and the incessant, often irrational anxiety. Your sesame seed wants you to be happy and not worry, IMO.

    EDD/Week/Fruit
    May 7 / Week 5 / Apple Seed

    Worries (rational or irrational)
Symptoms some and go. I'm trying to stay out of my head. It will probably get worse around week 7 since that seems to be about as far as I can get.

    Appointments scheduled
I have until next Friday, which seems like forever. I know going any earlier wont help since there isn't much to see right now.

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
Made it past my second due date this weekend. I planted a rose bush last spring for my April due date, but it was so hot this weekend I'm going to wait until this weekend to do something outside.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
I['m surprised that even though I've been through this part of pregnancy 3 times my symproms have been different every time. The early nausea is definitely the worst. The best is the hope of a take home baby.

@kate6214 How was your repeat blood work? How has it been with your students returning? May I ask what grade?

No news is good news on the bloodwork front. My HCG numbers have never been the problem. I think its just standard procedure for my OB since I've had 2 losses.

My students are doing better this week. I teach a preschool class in a public school. Its a full day program aimed at students from families that are struggling financially.  I have 15 three year olds currently. They keep me very busy, and this group has been a bit challenging already. Its hard when they are so young and have had no structure in their lives to all of a sudden be in school with tons of rules and structure. By the end of September it will be better.

Fifteen three year olds? That is the definition of insanity! Even three year olds with structure are crafty enough to drive a person batty. My hats off to you! :)

I'm sorry that you had to go through your second EDD this passed weekend. I'm also sorry that it was to hot to be outside and do something to remember. A rose bush sounds really nice.

I hope that your u/s is here before you know it!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • EDD/Week/Fruit :  April 29 / 6w6d / sweetpea (changed)

Worries (rational or irrational) Well my ILs spilled our beans to extended family and now I am terrified about having to share news of a m/c. Stupid ILs. DH is also really upset and anxious about this possibility as well. Sucks.

Appointments scheduled Next up is OB appointment 9/15. Had an ultrasound this morning for dating. Huge relief. All looks good. Saw the heartbeat (124). Measured 6w6d. She moved my due date from April 11 (based on LMP) to April 29. I was impressed with how well my charting was. I figured May 1 based off my chart. So dead on for the most part.

Upcoming milestones/Loss dates Just waiting to get to 12 weeks at this point now.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing? This is hard. Just the fact that I can be excited about a pregnancy. I am really trying to stay positive and enjoy this pregnancy. I never enjoyed the pregnancy with my DS, I lived in fear the whole time. I absolutely hate m/s, it sucks. I am over it and only really a week in. The next 9 months will be long if this goes the way it did with DS. Best thing so far was seeing the flutters today on the u/s. We both left so happy and excited. It became more real today.

@footprint : my appointment went awesome last week. I love this new office. So many fears washed away in that appointment. I realize again how poor my previous OB/OB office was. I already feel like I got more info this time around in one visit with them, than I did my entire pregnancy with my last office. Excited for our appointment next week with my actual OB to be able to ask some more specific questions and get some further information. Otherwise, m/s is kicking my butt. They changed my medication to try something else. This one is at least helping me keep food down, the little I can handle. But still horrible nausea. I will give it a few more days before I call to see about something else to see if it will get any better.

Congrats on the great u/s!!! And for seeing a great heart beat!!! That is awesome that you were so accurate with your chart. I am really sorry that your m/s is so bad. It does get old quickly. I hope you find a medication that works for you.

I can't believe that your IL would do that to your family. That sucks a lot, a lot. You want I should rough them up a little bit? Just to drive home the message that you don't ever tell about someone else's pregnancy.  Ever. That really, really sucks.

Hey! My Thursday appointment was great thanks. Met the most awesome OB ever. My bum is all good too! No more blood thank goodness.

    EDD/Week/Fruit
    April 4th/10w3d/prune

    Worries (rational or irrational)
My symptoms are becoming less intense. I know that's most likely because I'm nearing 2nd tri but I can't help but be a tad worried. My boobs especially feel almost normal (although they are definitely way bigger!)

    Appointments scheduled
I need to get a nuchal blood test over the next few days. That's not technically an appointment though as I can just walk in so I'll do it when I find the time. It has to be done before Saturday. I then have my NT scan scheduled for the 25th.

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
    None just yet.

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
The most surprising is how quickly it's gone by. I'm almost in 2nd tri and it seems like just yesterday I got my BFP. The worst thing has been trying to keep it a secret. At this point I am so ready to tell everyone! Also I know I've put on a noticeable amount of weight and although I'm not complaining I wonder if people are thinking "I wonder if she's pregnant or just fat?" Lol. Oh an I can't not mention the morning sickness! Although to some degree I love it because it confirms I'm still pregnant it also makes life kind of hard, especially my work life. It's also very sporadic. The best thing? I know it sounds cheesy but just knowing that I'm making a human being who I will care for and love and who will depend on me is just so special. It's a very warm, fuzzy kind of thing!

I'm so glad you like your OB! And that things are better for you.  The symptoms waning near the second trimester is a mindfuck (excuse my French). Will you be buying a home Doppler? A lot of people get relief having that

I've never actually thought about buying a home Doppler but it's definitely something to think about.

The most surprising thing is that I guess I'm maybe not quite as anxious as I imagined I would be...having said that, the worst thing is that I'm still really anxious!!!  Like @megdowntheshore, I think the best thing is feeling like I have a happy secret, especially after feeling like I've had a heartbreaking secret for such a long time.

I had made the choice to tell our immediate family and a few close friends. When I miscarried, no one knew about it except for DH and 2 friends. I went through 4 months of hell alone (from diagnosis to delivery). It was traumatizing. So we decided that we would tell those close to us so they could be understanding if we had another loss and also so I would have support. We planned to wait till 12-20 weeks to really share with extended family and everyone else. I was thinking Christmas cards. My DH was apprehensive about telling his parents, but we were seeing them and wanted to share the news in person. The next time we will see them will not be till January. I thought we had made it clear we were REALLY early on and had not seen anyone yet, but wanted to share in person. Guess we did not make it clear enough. I still feel awful that his sister did not learn from us. We are calling the family we know knows today to explain the situation and hope they understand to keep mouths shut. I am frightened because of PgAL brain. But I am so furious because this is OUR news. And we have had OUR news taken from us to share. I think we both feel very disrespected in the situation. Never again. If we ever have another pregnancy we will not be telling DH's family till later on. I was really okay with the people we had told knowing. But I have a lot of anxiety now about all the others who know. And I do not even know who all it is! :( Sorry for the rant. This definitely hit a nerve many times over for us.

No worries about last week, just whenever you feel like checking in is fine.  I totally get what you are saying about being not as nervous and extremely nervous at the same time. Í figured I would be paralyzed by fear in the first trimester. Granted there were some moments that I was, but it wasn't as bad as I had imagined. Maybe just my memory has changed so that I only remember not being as nervous as i was.

Can you find anyone else to go with you on Friday? I only ask because I was so nervous about my first u/s that I don't think I could have driven myself there.  I have everything crossed that Friday goes great for you. Please let us know how it goes.

My symptoms have been so much worse this pregnancy than either of my other two. All the women I know IRL that are pregnant again are having worse second pregnancies. It's weird. I attribute it to the fact that I am older and things just suck more when you are older. Now, I only have experience with this, no medical studies to back up this finding. I hope you begin to feel better soon.

No worries about responding later than others.   I'm sorry that your week has been rough.  Will you see the nurse on the 18th just to complete paperwork? I'm sorry that you are having anxiety about the two weeks before you see your OB. I hope that it isn't too anxiety-producing.

Have you found yourself more emotional since you became pregnancy? I cry more than I want to admit. If I see a video of a mom or dad or child returning from active duty, surprising his/her family, I bawl excessively. It is so weird.

Hi Ladies! Late to the game here, but thought I'd wait until after today's appt so I'd have more to say.

    EDD/Week/Fruit
April 17th, 8+6, Raspberry for one more day!

    Worries (rational or irrational)
Still very worried that the heartbeat will stop like last time. :( We've never gotten this far before, so now I get to consider all the crazy causes of loss beyond the first trimester, which are new to me.

    Appointments scheduled
Had one today! Baby measured almost exactly an inch (the equivalent of 9+2, although I'm 8+6) and everything looked perfect. Saw movement, which is INSANE! This should mean that I'll graduate from the RE. I have an OB appt in two weeks, but I think we'll likely switch doctors.

    Upcoming milestones/Loss dates
    We're past it!!!

QoTW: What has been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What has been the worst thing? The best thing?
The most surprising thing is that I feel mostly normal most of the time despite being more pregnant than ever before. @footprint, yup the symptoms are still erratic! I am pretty tired all the time, but that's about the only consistent one. Queasiness, food aversions, and bloating come and go, and my normal clothes are still fitting, even though they weren't comfy at the beginning. This is probably because I've lost a lot of weight due to the food aversions! I guess the worst thing is the realization that the worry doesn't end with the loss milestone. I'm not sure about the best thing yet--it's too soon! :)

In three weeks, how will they do the cervix check? I'm sorry that it is one more thing for you to worry about and that sucks.

@footprint They'll do a cervical length check via u/s. If everything looks ok, they'll check again during the A/S at the end of October. If it looks short, thinning or otherwise problematic, I'll have to get a cerclage done. I made the mistake of watching a youtube video of the procedure... now my cervix shudders when I think about it (Ok, exaggeration, but seriously!)

It does suck when you realize that the worry doesn't end with the loss milestones, even worse...the worry is amplified after the baby is born. It is crazy. And pretty stressful, but worth it. :)

If it looks short, thinning or otherwise problematic, I'll have to get a cerclage done. I made the mistake of watching a youtube video of the procedure... now my cervix shudders when I think about it (Ok, exaggeration, but seriously!)
Yeah, I wouldn't watch any procedures ever. I hope that everything looks ok and that you won't end up needing a cerclage.
