Scheduled Naptime

So I visited my family and my in-laws this past week and both asked when LO normally has his nap time.  My answer was basically, "umm, when he gets tired?"  Should he be on a more regular nap schedule?  How do I even put that into place?  I usually just put him down when he's tired, but sometimes he's tired at 10 am and other times not until noon, or whatever.

  • Hahahaha. We have a routine, kinda, but he sleeps when he's tired. It's generally around 9, 11:30, and 2:30. But he's not napping now, soooooo. I just think it's fighting a losing battle if I put him in his crib when he's not sleepy. We all end up frustrated.

But I haven't won any gold stars in the sleep dept, so I wouldn't listen to me.

  • We had a really good schedule from about 3mos-6mos.  Now he seems like he's ready for a change, but neither of us can quite figure it out.  So I'm also a "whenever he's tired."  I hope we get on a 2 nap a day schedule soon.

I know around 6 months a lot of people moved to the 2-3-4 thing.  It didn't work for us. Maybe it will soon.

  • We don't have a set schedule, really. Whenever DD gets up, she eats. She typically eats every 3 hours. We do solid foods an hour after 2nd and 4th bottles. She sleeps in between there, whenever she is tired. She doesn't even do a 'morning' and 'afternoon' nap, usually, it's just whenever.

She goes to bed between 8 and 10pm, and is up between 6 and 10am.

  • You mean your babies actually nap? ;-)

I'm (mostly) kidding, but DD is still the queen of the catnap. Our routine screws her over, really... she gets up, has her bottle, gets dressed and then near immediately gets in the car for 45 minutes. (If she's up early, she sometimes plays a bit while I finish getting ready and packed up, but it's never more than 45 min or so from get up to car seat time). So of course she conks out on the ride. She can usually be counted on for a decent morning nap after her next bottle, but afternoons are a total crapshoot, and then we have a 45 min ride home, where she conks out again. So it just reinforces multiple short naps vs. consolidating to 2 longer ones.

It works ok most of the time (ie, I only have overtired screaming banshee every now and then... like yesterday...), so we'll roll with it since our long drive times won't be changing any time soon.

  • I do one morning nap and ome afternoon nap. They are roughly at 9 and 1:30, but it varies a lot. I am just starting to working on more consistent times. As they get more mobile and more active I have found scheduled naps more helpful.
This, but it varies by an hour, depending on when he wakes up. He also often has around 6. I tried to drop the late nap and move up bedtime, but it didn't work, he'd just wake up again ready to party.

  • Yes, LO developed scheduled nap times just like DD did between 5 and 6 months. He wakes between 6 and 7 and naps at 9 am and 1 pm.

  • No schedule here either. She sleeps when she wants. I handled DS the same way. He eventually put himself on a two nap a day schedule that I could actually follow but it happened naturally and I'm pretty sure he was much older.

  • We used to do three naps. Up for about 2 hours in between. But lately she has been up 3-3 1/2 hours in between and skips the late afternoon nap. She wakes up at 7:30 am and then To bed around 7 (earlier if she is really cranky).
  • Here I can count on a morning nap that begins between 8:30 and 9. The second nap is usually around 1 but if we are out and about then sometimes a little cat nap happens and then the nap isn't until 2 or 3. We are mostly at 2 naps here but if we go out later in the day he may fall asleep again especially if the naps were short earlier.

  • LO has two pretty scheduled naps. She goes down for a morning nap 2 hours after waking so between 8:30-9 she goes down. She will sleep until 10/10:45. Then afternoon nap is usually between 12:45/1:00 and she will sleep until 2:30-3:30. It's the same schedule DS was on.
