New to the group. Just got ADHD & Opposition Def D dx.

Took the dx straight to DS's guidance counselor and shared with his 1st grade teacher.  Any tips from some experienced mamas? Going to get script on Monday.

  • Welcome! My 3rd grade DS was Dx with ADHD this summer. He's on concerta and doing well. School seems to be going more smoothly this year with meds on board.

  • Auntie, it was suggested by DS's doctor. I brought it up to DS's Guidance Counselor and she said that classroom modifications can be made informally. If need be, they can go through the formal route of a child study and a 504 plan. He's already been given an unofficial tweaking of the discipline policy due to his condition. Thanks for the question!

A verbal agreement to provide modifications is worth the paper it's written on, in other words nothing. It can be hard enough to get Schools to provide appropriate supports that are agreed to under and IEP and that is with a legally binding document requiring them to provide said services.
Yes this year the school/teacher may be cooperative but there are no guarantees and it can take months to get an  eval and set up the plan.
You do not want your son in the position of needing supports they have decided not to provide and him struggling for a large chunk of the year and suffering when you can preemptively set him up for success.

  • Ditto @bubba2b‌ and @hopecounts‌...request the evaluation and have him followed by Child Study. My DD (1st grade) has ADHD. She has accommodations but doesn't qualify for services. Still, the CST took her diagnosis into account when they chose her class placement for this year, and her current teacher was able to read all of the notes from our meetings last year before school started.

From the first day the teacher already had a good idea of what would set DD up for success. Without going through the formal process, you lose that continuity, and your son loses the protection of a formal, written agreement.
  • Thanks, Ladies!  This is good information.  Thank you!
