January 2015 Moms

When did/will you take any classes?

I'm a FTM and the hospital where I'll be delivering offers a variety of classes.  I want to do their baby care and prenatal breastfeeding class but was wondering how soon I should do it?  I'm the kind of person who gets super anxious when there's things on my to-do list, so it's driving me crazy.  I know that if I could at least sign up for it it would make me feel a little better haha.

Re: When did/will you take any classes?

  • Our hospital has a list of dates for all the classes for the entire year. We are taking a birth class, baby care class, and breastfeeding class. Since none of those are offered in December, there is at least one we will take in October, and the others in November (I can't remember if we are taking one or two in October). I would check the dates that are available and just take them when it works best with your schedule.

  • I didn't do classes last time and I won't this time either.

But if you want to, I would suggest looking into it sooner than later. I know my hospital suggested I had classes done by 35 weeks and some classes were spread out over multiple weeks. I can't see tickers but I'm assuming your at least halfway thru your pregnancy so I say go for it!

  • Where do you live? Do you get really bad weather?

I would probably schedule it sooner rather than later so that there is less of a possibility if it being cancelled due to inclement weather.

Plus, if there is anything in the class that you haven't thought about getting for your baby, you still have time to!

  • @ShuShubee They do the classes once a month (there's a combo class discount, so I'm going to do their Saturday crash course kinda thing)  I was thinking about doing October too, they have 2 spots left eek lol.

@LuckyPenny1231 I hit the halfway mark today! =)

@BookitBoo I'm in Florida, so the only bad weather we really get is hurricanes and the season is almost over for that haha.  I do like your point about having time to get things!

  • I'm also a FTM and a planner.  We went on our Labor and Delivery tour last night.  I was the only one with questions the whole hour!!  There were 6 other expectant moms there.

I'm planning on a number of classes and most of them are over a couple of nights or on limited weekends...  so we are planning on some in Oct and some in Nov.  I'm worried about trying to fit anything in at the end and also winter weather.  Every planning event I've been to (labor and delivery tour, meet and greet for duola)  I've been the person least far along but don't let it worry me.

Really? Which part? Hopefully hurricane season will finish out the year mildly, but then you'll have to fight the love bugs (yuck).

  • I'm doing a birthing class, a baby cpr class and a baby care class. The birthing one is the end of Nov and the others in beginning of December.

  • @BookitBoo I'm on the gulf beaches side of the Tampa Bay Area.  We haven't had any major storms this year, thank goodness (knock on wood), though we've been getting some awful rain and minor street flooding the past week or two.  We've already seen some love bugs around, bleh!

  • We are doing our childbirth class for two Saturdays in October.  Then we will do our newborn care class early November and the Breastfeeding class at the end of November (followed by a hospital tour afterwards).  I am due at the end of Dec/early Jan, so I didn't want to wait too long into November and am attempting to leave December free of scheduled events.

  • I'm due December 30th. Tonight is week 3 of our 12 week Bradley Method Classes (the 12 weeks include the natural birth preparation, breastfeeding and basic baby care). And we have signed up for the hospital tour on November 25th.

  • Last time we did classes in month 7-8. But once they were scheduled (in month 5!!!) I felt more at ease. We took a 6 week Lamaze class in addition to what you mentioned. I know some classes aren't everyone's cup of tea but I loved them.
  • At the birth center I go to, they recommend that you take classes before 36 weeks. I think it's good to take them a little closer to your due date. That way all the stuff you learn still is fresh in your mind when it comes time to use it.

  • My hospital recommends registering to take classes when you're around 30 weeks.

I called and scheduled those about two weeks ago and I'm so glad that I did because those were the only classes remaining between now and December!

  • I'll be taking any and all BF classes our hospital on base provides in November. I took all the childbirth/infant care classes first time around so I don't feel I need those this time.

  • I was just looking into this. They have two 4 week sessions available in my area. One starts 9/30 and the other 11/25. I feel like the 9/30 one is kind of early but 11/25 is the start of the holiday madness and DH and I are both in retail. We barely see each other during Nov and Dec so I guess I'm going to try to sign up for the earlier session. Also planning on a breastfeeding class as well.
