Reflux & sleeping in crib...am I being irrational?

1. I forgot my password to my account/cookies got cleared from computer & the "reset password" link on Bump NEVER sent me an email to reset the password. Tried many times...very frustrated. Had to create a new account & wait a few days to post this. Sorry for rant....

2. LO is on meds for reflux which has helped him a lot, but he still spits up some. He's been sleeping in a RnP since 2weeks. I want to transition him to his crib. I have a wedge under the mattress, although it's not as much of an angle as the RnP. The other night I put him in his RnP at first, but then put him in his crib after first MOTN wake. He slept for 2 hours in there (usually sleeps at least 3 hr stretches in RnP). It was a good start, BUT, I was awake and basically sat right next to him the ENTIRE two hours. I'm terrified that he is going to spit up at night and choke. Am I being irrational? I have a monitor, but DH has 12 fans going in our room at night, so I'm afraid I won't hear him spit up.

Has anyone else been through this?

Re: Reflux & sleeping in crib...am I being irrational?

  • My LO has reflux as well, and we didn't elevate the crib. I know how you feel, it is scary at first, but both of you will get used to it. All the research I did suggested that the benefits didn't outweight the risks. The link I posted states that it's actually better for babies because they can swallow the spit up back, vs it going to their lungs (gross, I know).

My LO shifts around constanctly in her sleep, and I was worried about her being elevated, and moving so often. She has been fine, and trust me there were some major vomiting moments before her medicine really kicked in. Oh and those vomiting moments were pretty loud.

  • Before the "Back to Sleep" campaign, parents were instructed to place babies on their stomachs so that they didn't choke if they spit up.  Then research showed that the risk of SIDS was lower with babies on their backs; this is the safer position, even if the baby spits up.  As long as your baby is healthy, and has a normal gag reflex, he will cough out any spit up.   I'm sure your doctor would reassure you if you asked him/her.
  • Thanks ladies. (I got my original log in issue fixed today. Wahoo!)

My head tells me it will be fine. My heart doesn't listen too well. And here I thought I'd worry less with DS#2!

I guess I'll keep working on the transition & try to get some sleep!
