To the ER or not...

I keep going back and forth. I've been sick since Friday morning and I've spent most of my day either sleeping or puking. I went in to the walk in clinic this afternoon in hopes I could get something to help with my naseousness. I talked to the doctor and she said I had the stomach flu and I'd just have to ride it out. I really try not to go to the doctor unless it's needed so this was a pretty disappointing appointment. I constantly feel like throwing up/have heartburn. I've had a piece of toast since Friday morning and I can barely keep liquids down. I called DH crying in the bathroom because I'm exhausted and just want to sleep but the constant level of naseousness just doesn't allow it. I really feel like I should've pushed more at my walk-in appt, but I didn't. I'm debating on whether or not to go to the ER to get some relief. I don't think I'd need an IV as I don't have a headache so pretty sure I'm not dehydrated. This constant nausea is just making me miserable. If I could just sleep then I would be better, but I can't even sleep at this point because I feel so sick. I hate to be 'that' person at the ER because I really do feel that the ER should be used in cases of emergencies. But to be honest, I'm fucking miserable. At what point do I call it, and just bite the bullet and go in? Or just suck it up because Im a pansy?

  • I don't think I would go to the ER. I am big on emergency rooms are for emergencies also. Hopefully it's just a bug and you will feel better in the am. Have you tried taking a warm bath? It sounds awful and I hope it passes soon. :(.

  • I wouldn't go if it were me.  Peppermint tea?
  • If you haven't eaten or slept in 24 hours I think the ER is a good idea.

I was able to sleep until 3 today and I've been sleeping non-stop until this point. Now because of my nausea I can't sleep though. I just can't get comfy enough to fall asleep.

At this point, I just want to feel better. I'm super thirsty, but I haven't drank a ton because I'm afraid I'll throw up. I'm afraid I'll get dehydrated but I know I'm not to that point yet. I wish they would've just given me something to stop the queasiness at the doctor. That was the whole fucking point of going.

  • I would go, but then, I don't pay for ER visits. They'd probably give you fluids just in case, plus Zofran for nausea and possibly a pain med.
  • I would, but fluids is the only thing that stops that sort of thing for me. Plus, they could give you zofran and/or phenegran.

  • If it doesn't feel like you got a thorough exam and "something just isn't right" and the nausea has been that bad - I'd go ER or up in this area we've got what's called an "Urgency Room" which is a half-step which is what I'd opt for in your situation.  Sure the ER probably isn't going to do much for you, but if you went in to UC with the request to just get something to cut the nausea down a bit so you can rest, and without doing anything said "go home and suck it up buttercup" (paraphrasing here - I think UC unless you're lucky enough to have your primary working is a waste of time and money in most instances),.  There are things that can be more serious than a stomach bug (very rarely is it flu - it's more likely food poisoning of some sort) that can cause serious nausea as a symptom (bowel obstruction, constipation, gall bladder, appendix, etc.) not saying that it's the case, but if you know there's something bigger going on trust your instinct...

IMO - if you have to debate and think there's something more going on and you got the UC Blowoff and want the second opinion, then go...

  • I decided to just bite the bullet and go. I can barely drink anymore and I'm starting to get a headache. If I'm not dehydrated then I'm probably on my way. Hoping I can get some Zofran or something to cut down on the nausea. At this point, I don't even want food, I just want something to drink. I haven't felt this bad in a long time :(

  • Good Luck!  @Aussie45, keep us posted!
  • Benadryl is supposed to help with nausea. My nurse friend told me that & grape juice helps with the stomach flu. Don't ask why. I saw that on Pinterest & a couple of my mom friends tried it.

  • You could also try Unisom, which is marketed as a sleep aid but is an antihistamine that helps with nausea (and has the added benefit of knocking you out). It's OTC and worth a shot.

  • @NandaB‌ Normally, that's my sentiment which is why I was so hesitant to go. Got an IV and I'm feeling slightly better now. My body sucks at fighting off infections.

Glad you're feeling better! I went to the ER once before when I had a flu that lasted for days and days, and I was glad I did. The IV really helps, and make sure you do drink something after you go home. I actually find that puking isn't as bad if I drink something as it is when I'm totally parched and have nothing in my stomach. Feel better!!

I wouldn't mind puking if it meant I would feel better. For the past three days, it's been non-stop dry heaving. The constant queasiness is getting really old.
