Sleeping arrangements?

27 weeks now so we have some time but...
Hubby and I live in a small one bedroom apartment and we have a crib but no bassinet (at least not yet). I was wondering if anyone had any experience in putting the twins directly into the crib for sleeping when you bring them home? I want to try and keep them sleeping together (in the same room at least) but my Hubbs worries that they wont sleep in the crib right off because it wouldn't be conformed to them like how some bassinets dip. I figured as long as they are swaddled and close to each other it wouldn't be as scary. Any advice or experience?

Re: Sleeping arrangements?

  • No experience with twins but with my daughter she went straight into the crib.  We swaddled her for a while and she slept great.  We plan to do the same with these two.

  • DS1 slept in the crib from the day we brought him home from this hospital (but we had to start with him swaddled, inside of a Summer Infant bassinet, in the crib first and then transition him to swaddle only in the crib). Our twins, however, refused to sleep in their cribs at nighttime or for naps. We kept them in their RNPs in their room until they were comfortable with their cribs.

  • We went straight to the crib and swaddled.  They shared for about 3 months until we separated their cribs, but still in the same room.

We did sometimes have them sleep in the RnP but that was only for my convenience as it was easier for me to lay in bed and feed them while in the RnP.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • If the crib is in your room, go for it! The only way I'd say anyone would be suffering by putting a newborn into a crib from the very start is if that crib is across the hallway in another room, forcing you to travel from room to room fifteen times a night ;) An empty crib with a firm mattress, free from blankets and pillows, in your bedroom is the safest place for newborn little ones.
