Hello (newbie here)
My husband and I are planning to try next summer (there are several factors that just make that time & corresponding due dates ideal for us, our jobs, & our families). While it is a ways away I have my yearly appointment with my gyno tomorrow and I plan to bring this up since it is my last doc appointment before we TTC.
I am most interested in knowing what vitamins etc. Other than folic acid I should make sure I'm getting with my multivitamins and how soon before TTC I should stop birth control.
What else am I missing? This will be our first time around & I want to make sure my body is as healthy & prepared as possible. Just wondering what types of questions others had for their doc?
Re: Preparing for TTC questions for doctor
I also had some questions about anything in particular I should avoid totally or during 2WW. Pregnancy will be an adjustment for me as I currently eat sushi once a month, have an alcoholic beverage probably 2 or 3 times a week, and drink a fair amount of coffee/espresso. Other than BC I don't really have any prescriptions to come off of but I do have a rescue inhaler I use every few months.
I know it can take a while but we are reeeeallly hoping we can make it in a 5 month window! But if we inch out of that it's not like we will stop and say "oh we will wait for this window again next year because it's most convenient". Life doesn't always happen in the most convenient way
That's a big reason why I want to know when I should stop BC though. I don't want to miss out on a few months of our most convenient window because my body is regulating/not ovulating
2. Get your flu shot and any other booster shots you and YH are in need of. Get your titers run if you are unsure if you are in need of boosters. Many people who had an MMR vax as a teen are no longer immune and that particular booster needs to be done 30 days before you come off BCP.
3. Ditto PP's on Fertility Friend tutorials and Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
4. You don't need to avoid or give up anything for the 2WW. You don't even really need to give up most stuff during pregnancy. I ate sushi for the majority of my pregnancy and my kid is perfectly happy with his 15 toes and third eye.
There, I just summed up your preconception appointment. Can I charge you a copay?
During that time, definitely start temping and charting with fertility friend.
It was my yearly OB exam but no up charge for the questions thank goodness
FYI she prescribed me a prenatal & said the same about not worrying about sushi & alcohol while TTC, only when I get a BFP. She also said that since I drink just one coffee pretty much daily & don't drink any pop that I won't even need to cut back when
pregnant
However, she did say that the vast majority of women will ovulate their first month off of nuvaring & that they only recommend waiting one cycle because you are more likely to hyper ovulate & conceive twins the first month off. Since we would love to have twins (only want 2 kids total & would like them close in age) she said she would just recommend trying the first month off.
I am probably going to go with that plan. If I happen to be in the minority who take a while to regulate I'm prepared for that consequence. I'll keep my fingers crossed
I just want to clarify that I have 2 or 3 alcoholic beverages a week... not "I drink 2 or 3 nights a week" as in I get drunk. We usually keep wine around the house & beers in the fridge & I will have one glass with dinner every now and then. Most of my friends drink more frequently than I do and haven't had problems with it.
I will have to do more research on the sushi thing too. My doctor said "not after BFP" & my SIL is almost due & a sushi fanatic & hasn't touched it the whole time so I think I'll get some looks from family if I do otherwise. But it does seem a little overkill to completely eliminate some things that have very minimal risk.
SIL's pregnancy has definitely had an effect on how I think about my future pregnancy because everyone around us is seeing how much she has given up (she completely eliminated coffee at first and then gave in to a few cups every now & then. Even switched to non caffeinated pops etc). I don't want to look like the family member who half-asses it so I feel like I'll be explaining a lot of decisions to people for fear of judgement. The misconceptions can be frustrating!
::facepalm::
