Pregnant after 35

Should I see a obgyn specialist if I'm pregnant at 36?

This is my first time getting pregnant. We got lucky after trying for 3 months. I was wondering should I see a specialist because of my age factor or just go to a regular obgyn? Any suggestion I greatly appreciate. Thanks!!!

Re: Should I see a obgyn specialist if I'm pregnant at 36?

  • I am 35 and my OB sent me to a high risk specialist because of my Age. I am not sure if that is the norm or not but it was in my case. I seen both until about 2 months ago. Once they saw that everything was ok the specialist released me. Good luck!
  • Thanks amstevens78 for your feedback. I don't have a regular obgyn. I will see this specialist and hopefully I will be fine and he would release me to a regular obgyn. Good luck to you as well.

It's up to you, but just bc you are 36 doesn't mean you're high risk or you'll have problems that will require a specialist. I'm the same age as you and it cracks me up every time they put 'elderly mother' on my checkout forms. Stupid IMO but standard in their system I guess. I'm in better shape than most 20yolds. No doctor at any appt ever treated me like I was about to drop dead. And good thing they didn't. Oh, I go to a regular ob.
  • I am a complete newbie to all this but went to see my doctor yesterday once I got my positive result. and she said "you are the perfect age" (I turn 36 in a month). She will refer me to any ObGyn I want, and only asked that it be one associated with a hospital near my house, in case I'm taken from home to hospital by an ambulance (who just take you to the nearest or one of the nearest places). She thought that having the doctor who followed my pregnancy deliver the baby was important, if at all possible. All that to say that she seemed much more concerned about practicalities that will have an effect on the pregnancy than the theoretical questions related to maternal age.

She was overall extremely encouraging and said women are having healthy kids with very little help into their 40s and that "some doctors" make a big deal out of it but that she hasn't seen any clinical evidence in her practice that a 35+ pregnancy is high risk in and of itself.

  • If you have no high risk factors, a maternal fetal medicine doctor (high risk OB ) won't see you. There's no reason for you to go to anyone other than a reg OB. 35/36 is nothing.

  • Congrats and good luck.

I am 37 and first went to the OB, who referred me to the perinatologist - not due to my age, but other underlying medical conditions.  I primarily see the regular OB and the perinatologist coordinates with my other specialists on how to best treat my other health issues while not adding risk to the pregnancy.

Due to my age, I did get an NT scan and the Harmony blood test, and both were done at the specialist office, but that is only because my OB refers all of his patients over 35 to the specialist for that work, and my insurance approved it.

  •  I'm 43, and seeing a regular ob. The only time I have seen the perinatologist was at the NT scan and the 20 week one-just because of my age. I haven't seen her again, everything is going along very normally.
  • I would talk to a regular OB or midwife (if you prefer that) first. I am 37 and seeing the same OB who delivered my other two children. He has not said a word about going to a specialist and this pregnancy is turning out to be as uneventful as my last two (at 27 and 33).
  • Congrats!  I'm 36 and I see a group of midwives.  They said that they would refer me to a high risk OB if I had something that made me high risk, but being over 35 isn't a reason without something else going on.  I'm getting pretty close to the end and have had zero issues so I'd start with your regular OB or MW and go from there.

  • My OB said my age with DS was not a high risk factor alone.  I was 38 when I delivered.  I did see the perinatologist for my NT scan/bloodwork and a couple other times to monitor his growth, but always saw my OB as well.  I am curious with this one what will happen, since I had my DS 5 weeks early.  My first appointment is tomorrow.

  • Thank you everyone for your advice and inputs. I will choose to see a regular OBGYN and see how it all goes.

  • I see my regular OB with this pregnancy as I did with previous. He sent me to a MFM to do my level 2 ultrasound, but that's it.
