Cloth Diapering

How many cloth wipes?

I tried searching through posts but couldn't find anything; sorry if this is a repeat. For those who use cloth wipes, how many do you have/would you recommend? I made 36 today based on an online recommendation, but wanted to get feedback from some "real moms". Thanks!

Re: How many cloth wipes?

  • I would aim for closer to 48. It's common to use 2 wipes per change, and they are also good for wiping up hands and faces, etc.

  • 36 is a good number, but I would err on the side of too many. If you are making them, and have more material, I would add another dozen or so.

  • Thanks, ladies! I will make a few more; have plans to make paper towel sized ones since it occurred to me that they would be great for reusable "paper" towels, so no harm in adding some more to the pile.

  • 36 is good, but if I were you I would go out to Wal-Mart or Target and grab a pack of cheap washcloths.  I have somewhere in the ballpark of 36 "normal" wipes (assortment of wipes someone bought me and baby wash cloths we never used) but for poops I kind of like to use the heavier towel as a first (or sometimes second) pass and then use as many other ones as needed afterwards.

  • I have 24 of the Osocozy double sided wipes and then another dozen or two baby washcloths. I like having a variety for all my wiping needs. I never run out and we use them to wipe noses and faces after meals too.
  • Yeah what pp said. A variety is really nice! I ended up not like double sides or thick ones as pre wetted wipes. But I love them to dry with. I made lots of single layer flannel ones that I keep wet and do the dirty work ;)

  • I have about 50-60 I would guess. It's a lot more than I need at the moment, but I have bought more for when baby #2 comes in a couple of months. We just use baby washcloths and I have no complaints. Cheap and they work.

  • I have 40 and that gets me through no problem. I finish with disposable wipes though just to make sure all fresh and clean. But that's personal preference.
  • @Critter015 - good point about the washcloth being good for different types of messes. Maybe if I made a dozen or so that were flannel on one side and terry cloth on the other, those could be kept dry with a spray bottle on hand for spot wiping and tougher messes.

  • I have a bunch-over 50 I think and we are never close to running out by laundry day (EOD washing here). I started with a lot of cheap baby wash cloths which worked well; then we were given about 30 one-ply flannel wipes. Osocozy, i think? I really like those

since, I have like 3 more yards of fabric that I want to make into fun printed wipes. we don't only use them in the diaper area and….cute prints make them better
