Done with this daycare

I have the webcam service at daycare so I can check on DS. I planned on canceling after a month - wanted it just to make sure things are going well. Over the course of a few weeks, I learned that they don't pay near enough attention to some of these babies as they should. My son would be stuck in a bouncer seat or Boppy pillow for hours, unable to do anything or interact with anyone - restricting any development he would get by rolling around on the floor (which he loves to do at home). One time, they put him on a Boppy pillow for tummy time and he somehow pulled his arms back behind himself - with one kick of his legs, he was face-first in the pillow and struggling to move his head... Can we say suffocation? The teacher was somewhere off-camera (either changing a diaper or washing a bottle). After a minute, she flipped him over. I called the manager and I told them not to use the Boppys anymore with DS and that his pediatrician wants him to do more floor tummy time (true story). Since then, they just don't even do tummy time for him. Anyway, we decided to give our two weeks notice and put him into a family care house with our friend's sister. She only has 1 other baby, so he'll get more interaction and attention this way. It's been a real weight on my shoulders until today. I just hope we didn't trade in one set of problems for another. Wish me luck!

Re: Done with this daycare

  • You did the right thing. Babies should be moved around and not stuck in one thing for hours. How boring.

My advice is to trust your new dc provider until you have reason not to. If you go in waiting (or looking) for the new set of problems as you said you will always be unhappy with the outside care of your child. Good luck!

  • Oh my. Thank god you had the camera access! You are definitely doing the right thing!

  • This is why I didn't do a daycare. None of the local facilities use webcams so I would have no clue what is going on. Plus, the ratio at most of them is 4:1. I'm so grateful I've found such an awesome sitter. I'm terrified she will one day tell me she can't care for DS anymore and it will be so hard to replace her. Especially for $5/hour
  • We are looking for a new provider after only 3 weeks. Ugh! Ours is an in-home. She sounded good but isn't. She said she wouldn't take another infant and one just started that's 10 days younger than DD. She said the kids never watch tv and 3 times I  have picked her up it has been on. I'm so not looking forward to the process but DD deserves better!

  • At the montessori I work for we don't have swings, exersaucers etc. We believe in having a non-restrictive environment. Boppys are not meant for tummy time anyway. Sounds like you made a good decision in leaving.

Oh god this scared the crap out of me. I use a Montessori too and part of the reason was they are supposed to do movement and stuff with the babies but there are no cameras...what if they don't do what they say they do?

Aw you work in a Nido? I've always wanted to see one! We don't need them in Canada so I just have ICs :)

    Sorry to high jack.
  • Thanks for all of the encouragement! If the family care situation doesn't work out, I'll look into a Montessori. I know they usually cost quite a bit more than regular day cares (at least the ones I toured in Dallas), but the expense may be worth it for peace of mind and DS's development.

  • @Marcella05‌ - I'm in the Dallas area and have a daycare I looooove that has cameras as well.
  • @KBowen715‌ - I'm in Carrollton, but this daycare is in Irving by my office. Where are you/your daycare?

  • Coppell! Super close.
  • Baby boy doesn't go (yet)- but my older boys went there and I just loved it.
  • @Marcella05‌ - sorry, tag didn't work the first reply post.
  • Oh that's wonderful! We should trade numbers for play dates. I don't know many moms with babies the same age as DS. I toured Creme de la Creme in Coppell because it's close enough to work, but was on the pricey end. Loved it though! Leaving it on the list if I get my promotion end of the year.

I would LOVE that! Creme de la creme is fab but crazy expensive. I'm referencing Discover and Share- it is great! PM me your number/email/whatever you're comfortable with and we can def do some play dates.
  • I also live near Dallas, but I work in Allen. Our center is comparable to Creme de la Creme and we are nationally accredited for our curriculum, along with super low ratios. I have heard Creme is crazy expensive... for the most part so are we, but I get a 75% staff discount for my older son's private kindergarten and we LOVE it. They have all sorts of progressive stuff in his class including a high-tech 'smart board' like this one:

Had to AW that thing, even I want to play with it. lol

Hi neighbor- love it, but most ISDs have moved to smart boards as standard. I know my kids have one in every classroom at CISD. I haven't seen a chalk or whiteboard in years. Hooray technology!

This. I will be forever thankful that we relocated so I can stay home with DD.

LISD schools (or at least my SD's schools) have them, too. :)

  • Smart boards are considered old technology in many education circles now because they're still pretty teacher centered. It is all about 1:1. :)
