Cloth Diapering

How much did you spend on NB stash??

So I just finished putting together my NB stash and I calculated how much I spent on everything..... $193.14!  Yikes.  Much more than I meant to spend (don't tell my husband).  I thought this cloth diapering this was supposed to SAVE money?? Baby girl is only going to be wearing these things for 2-3 months!

Anyway, here's what I spent the money on.  I have enough for 33 changes.  How'd I do?  Anything I should tweak?

AIO's:
    2 NB bumgenius, used
    1 NB simplex, new
    1 NB rumparooz, used
    1 NB imagine, new

Pockets:
    2 XS charlie bananas, new
    1 NB alva, new
    1 NB blueberry, used

Prefolds/Fitteds:
12 GMD orange edge prefolds, used
     6 Imagine NB prefolds, used
     3 GMD NB workhorses, used
3 kissaluvs size 0 fitteds, used

Covers:
2 NB bummis super brites, used
2 thirsties duo size 1, used
1 NB bummis super snap, used
     1 NB rumparooz, used

and 3 snappis.

Re: How much did you spend on NB stash??

  • That is pretty much what I spent.  I had:

20 Workhorses (But I got them on the black Friday Sale) $70

A dozen GMD Prefolds (Sale) $18

10 BG AIOS (6 I bought from someone who had just prepped)  $60

    7 Assunta Tiny Covers $35

2 Rar Covers (Both used)  $12

    3 Bummis Covers (Used) $13

So like a little over $200.  When I sold my stash I got pretty close to that, maybe like $150 to reinvest.

  • Wow good deal on those workhorses and prefolds! Jealous!
  • I did such a good job sleuthing my newborn stash and reselling.  Seriously, my OS stash did not follow in that tradition.  Oh $45 for a WAHM embroidered dipe?  No prob.  Jules?  Yes gotta have.  lol.  Ahhh well.

  • Around $175 here... We had 24 newborn prefolds and 2 kissaluvs size 0's. And 5 or 6 covers. We also used washcloths for wipes, so add $10 for that.

She wore newborn size for 8 or 9 weeks, and disposables diapers and wipes run at least $200 for that amount of time. And these I get to sell and make money back - with disposables your money is down the drain.
  • I don't know exactly how much I spent, but probably around what you did. I had:

    6 GMD NB prefolds - $12
    3 GMD NB bamboo prefolds - $8
    6 GMD NB workhorses - $33
    2 lil joeys AIO
    4 NB Simplex - $75
    6 Thirsties Sz 1
    7 Kawaii P&N's

I could still use the Kawaii if I wanted to, and I just put away the simplex about 2 weeks ago, and I am still using the thirsties covers, so I feel like I got my money out of them. We'll plan to use them for a 2nd LO at some point too.

  • 12 nb GMD prefold seconds= 21.95
    24 nb GMD prefolds used= 15.00
4 xs thirsties covers Craigslist =20.00
    2 xs thirsties covers yardsale = 1.00
    5 kawaii P&Ns, new= 30.00
    4 BG nb AIOs used= 12.00
    1 nb alva pocket, new = 4.00

    Total About $104

But I also have 8 assunta tiny covers that could count as nb, so that another $39.

  • I think $150...lots were gifts
I've never bought disposables, but I think that a box of 108 is about $40. I'm POSITIVE that the 193 you spent is less than diapering a newborn with disposables. You go through that in a week...sometimes less (we had some 20 diaper days in the beginning) Therefore the cloth is ridiculously cheaper than that

    And you can resell :)

  • About $100, but some of my NB stash I got through swapping, not actually paying.

I got 24 xs prefolds, 6 flats, 8 NB covers, and 6 small workhorses (all new) for $173 plus tax.  I am storing the covers and workhorses in case we are crazy enough to have another baby- if not we will sell.  1/2 of the prefolds I use as rags in the kitchen and 1/2 of the prefolds I still use as doublers.

I spent close to $300 on my newborn stash, but that was for 50 changes with 10 covers. I got 24 prefolds, 12 flats, 8 fitteds and 6 pockets. Now, the flats will last until PLing. The prefolds were used, but everything else was new.

A lot of the cost is that I'm in Canada so things are more expensive and shipping costs a lot more, which I include in my cost calculations.

I've started selling some of it off already and I made what I paid back for the prefolds. I'm hoping to make at least half back, but there isn't a huge used diaper market in my area so it might take time.

  • I'm new to this cloth diapering. Question I have is what is a workhorse everyone is talking about? I am lucky I've bought a few prefolds, flats and all in ones, but MIL is going to make a lot of fitted and covers so I will have spent less. It sounds expensive to have spent about 200, but I did disposable with my first child and it added up fast. Plus, you can resell cloth diapers, and make some money back :). If you still worry go look and see how much a box of diapers is and figure on using a box or so a week then you will feel better about your choice.

    These!

Also I think $200 is very reasonable. Remember you can sell them for at least 50% of what you spent when you're done. Usually more since they are used for suchh a short time. Or you can diaper a second and/or third child for free.

Oh and your prefolds can be tri-folded and laid in a cover or used to stuff pockets when they get too small to snappi.

  • Um, I'm not going to add it up because it is a ridiculous amount. A mix of flats, prefolds, fitteds and wool.

  • I spent $140 on the diapers I actually used and kept, which was 3 Prowrap covers and 21 Kissaluvs fitteds plus extra inserts for those. I also received one Bummis cover as a gift which I used, but I would have been fine with just the three covers.

I also bought Kawaii P&Ns that I quickly sold because they didn't work for us, and I got some Thirsties Duo size one covers which we didn't end up using until she was 3 or so months old and by that point we had switched to one size, so they got very little use. I keep them around now as just in case covers if I run out of pockets, they still fit her a few weeks ago last time I used one.

I also have a dozen prefolds that I occasionally used as newborn diapers, but mostly used as burp cloths and changing pads - which I still do, so I don't consider them strictly "newborn" purchases.

That $140 worth of diapers covered three months for my first child, and they are in great shape for my next as well. Totally worth it! Between that and not having to buy wipes, we saved a massive amount even for the short time of use.
