Going to Urgent Care....Vent. UPDATE

Couldn't get an appointment with my primary care, so I called and made an appt. with urgent care because I am miserable.

I have this "thing" on my face (on my jawline). It started out as a small bump, maybe an ingrown hair? Maybe a sting or a bite? Who knows...but it has been steadily growing the last few days and is SO painful, red, hot and swollen.

Whatever it is, it hurts a lot and I think it is infected.  I have tried icing it, putting moist heat on it, even toothpaste (which my sister swore would dry it out).  It does not seem to be in need of popping, but instead feels solid.

I am freaked out and in pain, so I am going to Urgent care to see what they can do.

I am sorry to be such a wimp, just looking for someone to tell me its ok.  This has been a horrible week for me ( NO A/C at work, it is currently 84 in my classroom and as I teach students with Autism, sitting still is not really an option.  To make matters worse, being this hot all day has made it extremely difficult to eat and that of course has led to me feeling worse) .  Anyways... I just need some relief.  Hoping that some relief from this  is a start.

As long as I tell them at Urgent care that I am pregnant, I should be able to trust that (as doctors and nurses) they will know what is safe and what is not for me and baby as far as meds and/or topical applications...right?

Thanks in advance for listening to me whine. You all are the best!

UPDATE: So after having three or four people come in to gaze at the nasty growth on my face, and a nurse sent to take a picture of it....they diagnosed it as "nasty cellulitis" and said it could have been any sort of irritation that started it and prescribed Cephalexin which he assures me is totally safe for me and baby. Anyone taken it while pregnant before? He promises I will feel better soon! Thanks again for all the support gals! Edited for update and chubby typo fingers.

  • Sorry you're going through this, let us know what happens! As far as the doctors and nurses, I don't see why they wouldn't know how to handle things just because you're pregnant

  • I'm not a doctor, of course, but to me it sounds exactly like what DH once had a couple years ago and we found out it was a staph infection. I don't know what they'll do for you, again I'm not a doctor, but just like twolittledogs said just double check with the pharmacist. Good luck!

  • If it's not completely obvious just be VERY clear with the doc/nurse treating you that you are pregnant and concerned about receiving anything that might harm the baby.  Not all doctors/nurses are familiar with every little thing that might be contraindicated during pregnancy.

I went to an urgent care when I got a bad poison ivy reaction.  I wasn't pregnant but I was nursing my DD and made sure to tell him this.  He ended up giving me a steroid shot and admitted he didn't know if it would be compatible with breastfeeding or not.  He suggested I pump and dump for 24 hours "just in case" but full on admitted he didn't know if it was bad for baby or not.  If you express your concerns they should be honest with you in return.

Best of luck, and hope it's nothing serious!

  • Im an Urgent Care nurse- definitely tell your nurse triaging you but ALSO mention it to the doctor. The docs are not always 100% up to date with pregnancy categories because they dont see an abundance of pregnant women so I always tell my patients to double check with the pharmacist-and if there are any red flags the pharmacy will call.

I myself had an infectious rash all over my legs around 16 wks and my Urgent Care Doc that I work with majority of the time gave me a script that was not pregnancy safe (and also mis-diagnosed me.. I diagnosed myself and my PCP agreed) so needless to say, I double check with the pharmacist regardless of how confident the doctor may seem!

    Good luck to you!
  • I'm glad they have an idea of what it is! Hope the meds take care it pronto.

I was on Cephalexin for a bladder infection. I was assured by my dr and pharmacist that it was perfectly safe. :-) I hope you feel better soon!

Eta: maybe ask the pharmacist about a probiotic. Don't want to end up with a yeast infection too.

  • Keflex (brand name) is safe in pregnancy. Just an antibiotic. It's a category B like most of the others. Take as directed. Don't stop it early even it symptoms disappear.

  • I'm glad they diagnosed it! And fortunately it can be treated while you are pregnant!

  • Is "nasty" a medical term? ;)

Hope the antibiotics start working quickly and you feel better soon.

Thanks all! I'm really glad it wasn't worse. And after the pharmacist told me to check with my OB before taking the meds, and of course me then calling my OB , she assured me that the meds are safe and she is SO glad I decided to go rather than leave an infection untreated. So yay me-I made the right call. :). Have a great weekend and thanks for all the support!

Edited to add:: @AllTheTeaInChina‌ yes I assume that "nasty" is a medical term because that is exactly what the the doc called it! LoL. I guess that makes it one grade worse than a regular cellulitis? Haha

Double check with the pharmacy and your OB office on the prescription. It doesn't hurt to be safe. A quick Google search could also let you know if it is safe, ok, use sparingly, or should be avoided. (Just to give you an idea before your OB returns your call)

  • Thanks @CandEChicago‌ Luckily my OB called back within minutes ( love her!) and said it was perfectly safe and she is glad I didn't wait any longer to get the infection treated. :) it's already looking better this morning after just one dose! Thank goodness!
  • Sorry I did not read above.
