Diaper Sizes and Subscriptions

I am 18 weeks with Boy/Girl twins, so I know this conversation is a bit premature, but I'm a planner and can't help myself.  We are on a strict budget and I'd like to go ahead and sign up for the Amazon diaper subscription to start stocking up.
1. Is that silly?
2. How many boxes of each size do you think I should go with?
3. Advice on other ways to do it besides the Amazon subscription?

  • You can, but I always caution against it. My kids have super sensitive bums and we only use one type of diaper - pampers baby dry. We also can't use wipes & use wet paper towels instead(we use seventh generation when were out). It's a bit trial and error.

As far as sizing goes, a lot of it is how it fits on the baby. My kids were in NB for a while (the twins were preemies and my singleton was small and barely FT) but then race through sizes 1 & 2 and stay in size 3 for almost a year.

If you're budgeting, I'd set the money aside you'd spend each month so you have a stash to pull from when the babies are born.

We do an amazon prime subscription and like it a lot.

  • @carrotcake that is what I told DH about just putting the money away (even on a gift card), but I think the thought of having a stash excites him!  LOL

  • I wouldn't necessarily suggest purchasing any diapers just yet, but joining a delivery service at some point later on is definitely a good idea if you are looking to stick to a budget. We subscribe to Amazon Prime and Amazon Mom and get our diapers and wipes via Subscribe and Save.

We used preemie diapers on our twins for a week or two (they were 5.5 and 4.14 @ 37 weeks). When we moved up to size 1s, we went through 3 of the largest box available through Amazon for maybe 2 months. Then we moved to 2s for probably another 2 months (3 boxes/month), and we have been using 3s since then (we were able to go down to 2 boxes/month a few months ago). DS2 is probably ready for 4s now, but DD is a little too small for those.

Just a quick FYI, Pampers Baby Dry are literally the same diaper as LUVS... you may save yourself some money by switching. Both brands are made by Proctor & Gamble, and only became distinct looking around 2011 because word of mouth started spreading online (prior to that, the two diapers were practically identical, even down to the prints, the only thing that really differed was Pampers used a teal dye and LUVS used a blue dye - now they are made to look different and have slightly different shapes, but they are the same diaper). LUVS were the "premium" P&G brand in the 80s, and dropped as the budget brand in the 90s because people were so much more familiar with the Pampers (the first disposable diaper brand made by exactly the same company) line and preferred it.

  • Also if you have a baby shower you may get a ton of diapers that way. We got over 700 NB diapers plus quiet a few size 1 and 2.
  • Also if you do end up with diapers in the wrong size most places will exchange them as long as they are unopened.

  • I would caution stocking up through Amazon too early. Some of the box sizes they have for the subscribe and save are not available in stores.  So while if you had some diapers that are wrong size from amazon if the local store doesn't carry that box size you would not be able to exchange it. You would have to go through amazon for a return.

We waited until a month after we had our first (singleton) home and had an idea of how we were using diapers/size/brand until we set up our subscribe and save.

  • I cloth diaper, but when I buy disposables, I really like the target up & up brand. They are usually 5% off if you use the cartwheel app. We also buy their formula and it's usually 5% off on cartwheel too. We also got a red card to get 5% off our entire purchase. I haven't done the math on that vs the amazon subscription since we don't use disposables regularly enough to warrant it, but it's worth checking into.

  • I wouldn't stock up using Amazon because you will more than likely end up with a lot you won't like or use. We like to stock up using sales. Since we don't know what brands will fit the babies best or which sizes will or won't be used as much.... We get a couple cases of each brand, each size when they are on sale and we have a coupon. Then we have a decent stock but not too overboard and a good variety to figure out what we like. Also, remember you are bound to get a bunch from people as gifts.

  • IMO, this is impossible to know since no one knows how big your kiddos will be at birth, how quickly they will grow, which brand of diapers will fit them best (and it may be different for each baby), how frequently you'll change them, etc.

My girls ended up being allergic to Pampers and Huggies and we use Up&Up which you obvi can't get on Amazon.
