Low dose HCG question

My IVF protocol uses low dose HCG with follistim (I don't see many other people that have this protocol on here). The issue is, the pharmacy did not tell me to refrigerate the low dose HCG, nor did they give it to me cold/ refrigerated, so I have been using it for a week at room temperature. I mentioned to my RE that I had read online that this med should be refrigerated, but the pharmacy told me that was not necessary - he immediately ordered a new batch for me for the last couple of days on stims. I am really just curious what this would impact - the quality, quantity, rate of growth of the follicles?  Thanks!

Were the HCG shots pre-mixed?  I've only heard that you should refrigerate after mixing/prepping the solution and powder.  So I got mine non-refrigerated and only refrigerated the times when I prepped in the morning and didn't do the shot until a little later.

Most of what I've read regarding refrigerating fertility meds, it's important to help prolong potency, but it's not necessarily a crisis if they are at room temperature.  It just means the potency of the drug will lessen faster.  However, if you did your stims relatively soon after getting the meds, I think it's fine.  My RE only seemed concerned when I had meds from a few months back that I wanted to use for my latest cycle.

It won't affect the quality of the follicles.  If the potency was low and you weren't responding as quickly as they wanted you to, they are getting you new meds anyways to get you back on track.  I think you're good.

  • It was premixed by the pharmacy. Starting off, when its premixed it only has a 9 day shelf life. So I am guessing that by keeping it room temp, it cut the shelf life down, so there were a couple of days I was probably not benefiting from it. Time will tell :)  Thanks for the info!

  • I have felt fine. I am a low responder... triggering tonight with 7 follicles and hoping for the best. I didn't notice any cramping. I was on 25 iu/day (very small dosage) and then 200 ius my last two days of stims. Definately refrigerate it :) Good luck!!
