DS rides the bus into his preschool program. Today was day three and getting him on the bus just keeps getting worse. First day there was whining as he was put in his car seat on the bus (he's nearly 3). Second day crying as the bus pulled up. Today... when I opened the door to head to the bus stop with him he ran and hid in his room and literally shat himself (as in a blow out that I then had to quickly change). I had to carry him kicking and screaming out the door... and onto the bus once it got there.

The driver says he's fine once the bus starts going and I had to swing by his school yesterday so I saw he's fine once he gets to school.

Am seriously considering just driving him at this point... even though it's a pita with an infant to bring along as well. He's not quite three, and developmentally is less than that, maybe this is just too much?

Tell me it gets better...

Is there a special toy or object he can only get on the bus to ease the transition to get on the bus?

I would give it at least a week before you write it off as a failure. Dd didn't like it at first but now she runs to the bus without even saying bye. She actually doesn't need to take the bus anymore since I take big bro to the same school at the same time but I kept her on since she loves it so much. Her teacher did a visual schedule with her and a social story and it helped.

I'd give it a little time.

It's new which can be scary, show him you have confidence that he can handle riding the bus and it's NBD and use the tricks mentioned above to help him adjust. 

I imagine he'll get used to in a week or two and will be fine once it's 'normal' for him.

An added twist: Got a call from his school. They want to switch what class he's in. The other one makes a lot of sense for him educationally, but I'm pretty annoyed they are switching him like this after the school year started.

That's irritating about the class swap but it happens. 

I was a teacher's kid and I had my class assignment switched after school started a couple times in elementary due to staffing changes. 

I know it's harder for our SN kids to handle new/different but change is also something that our kiddos have to learn to handle so look at it as an opportunity to work with him on that skill.

They said the main reason for the move is that the kids in his current class are older and more advanced. The program is ages 2-5. He's almost three, most if the class are 5. I guess the other class is a better fit for him both age and developmentally.

We're going to do the switch, but gradually. Have him spend some time in the other class the next few days and then after our trip (taking a week to go to a wedding and see family...I know poor timing, but I can't control when people get married) he'll be in the new class.

Bus went better today. Started dicey, with him running and hiding in his room when he saw his backpack, but the jelly beans DH got for the bus stop were a big hit and having his blankie for the bus ride seemed to really help. He even walked to the bus holding my hand and climbed into his car seat on the bus himself.
