Why the Wyatt hate?

edited September 2014 in Baby Names
I see so many people like the name even though it's becoming really popular.

Whats with the dislike?

I will fully admit it is in our top 3, but seeing all of the hate for it seriously makes me reconsider which would suck, because its the least boring name my husband will consider.

Re: Why the Wyatt hate?

  • I don't hate Wyatt. It's just too country for my taste. I prefer classic names.

  • I like Wyatt a lot.  Not sure I would ever use it, but I think it's a really handsome name.

  • We've considered Wyatt. Everyone has an opinion and you will probably never meet any of us in real life so what we think doesn't matter at the end of the day. If you want to use the name use it!
  • I really like the name Wyatt, I guess it all depends on the style of names you like. I saw a decent amount of people not into the name Cora, and that's the name we are going with! I say go with the name you like!

Cora is my top girl choice, too. It was my great grandmothers name and I always thought it was pretty. Everyone has their own style and it's not like this is the baby name authority. Just people sharing opinions.
  • I haven't seen anyone hate on Wyatt. It's just not everyone's style, but it's a perfectly normal name.

Typically, the only names people truly hate on this board are the made-up and misspelled ones.

    I like Wyatt just fine.

  • If you're on this board long enough, (not that I've been here very long) you'll start to get a feel for what people here think are "bad names" or types of names; and which are just disliked by some since its not their style.

Wyatt is definitely NMS! But I don't know that it's "bad". It was the name of our garbage man when I was growing up lol. I was never that attracted to him so... I can understand the country/western/hick feeling though I wouldn't have thought of it. A friend of mine named her baby Drew Wyatt and since I'm not fond of Drew either it just makes it worse.

  • I Thought I was alone in my Wyatt dislike. I agree it is very rural/country and not my style.

  • My nephew was born 3 weeks ago and they named him Wyatt.  They were considering Parker, but thought Wyatt was much more manly.  I think it's a great name :).

  • I like the name Wyatt, it was on the top of my boys name list last time I was pregnant.  It has since gotten more popular which is why it is not on my list this time.  I never thought of it as a country name but I see people say that a lot which has turned me off a bit that it is perceived that way though I am not sure why it is.  I have only know one person named Wyatt and that was in elementary school so I don't have any strong associations with it but maybe people just think of Wyatt Earp?
  • I like Wyatt. I do think it sounds country but I like many names that have that vibe. I didn't use any though.

  • Wyatt reminds ME of an 80s/90s name. That is not horrible, but there are not a lot of things from that era that I love. If you like it , then go for it. It is a good name that grows up well into adulthood......
  • Wyatt is nms, but my only problem with it for someone else is that it's popular right now and I like it when people choose less popular/trendy names. Other than that, if I had a friend who named her son Wyatt, I would not even side-eye it.

A lot of the people active on this board are name junkies and I think there is a reflex against popular/trendy names among name junkies. Or maybe it's just me.
  • I like it personally.

  • Wyatt to me is very country, and that's not my style. There are plenty of people who like that style though, and if you do it's a good choice. There are plenty of people who don't like my style either.

  • I love Wyatt!  Maybe it's a regional thing.  I don't think it's country at all...

  • It's NMS, but it's not a bad name. It just seems country/Western to me, and I live in the northeast. I don't know anyone with the name.

  • I don't mind Wyatt and it is not super popular where I live. I think there are a lot of names that sound nicer than the pretty harsh "why - it" sound. I am not a fan of Country names and group Wyatt in with Levi, Russ, and Colton. They all just feel like polished up "Buck" names to me if that makes any sense.

Like I said though, I don't mind the name and definitely don't hate it. Just not my style.

  • I like it.
  • I think it depends a bit what you think your child will be like too. For example, my husband is white and I'm Asian, and we were both skinny and nerdy as kids (and as adults too, though somewhat less skinny!). We plan on raising our kids in LA, where we currently live.

So, I'm not saying that lays a blueprint for our kids, BUT: I think that names like Wyatt (or Hank, as another example) are kinda more acceptable if we had a son than it would be for a kid who's more likely to grow up to be a jock or farm kid. Does that make sense? I think a skinny, bespectacled, striped-shirt wearing bookworm named Wyatt would be seriously adorable, and I would never once think "ew, that kid has a really countrified name."

And finally, Wyatt makes me think of Wyatt Cenac way more than Wyatt Earp. I'm a fan of the name!

  • I never would have thought Wyatt sounds country!  I knew a Wyatt in high school and he was such a prep, haha!  I think it's a fine name, but is it becoming super popular?  Maybe that's why there might be a disike for it.

  • I like the name. It's not in my top choices but I do enjoy seeing it on other little ones.

I'm also sitting here giggling about Wyatt being so "country." Maybe that's because I grew up in the Midwest and to me it just seems "normal." lol

  • Like others have said, I don't hate Wyatt.  It's just nms.

  • I don't like the way it sounds. That's all it just isn't pleasant to my ears.

  • I knew a girl who pronounced her boyfriend's name "Whaaat" because she was from the south and that is Wyatt with a southern accent, apparently. I am in the northeast and the name is very country and southern to me.

Wyatt is high on our list! I LOVE it and DH likes it so it's very possible that we will have a Wyatt someday.

Other names we love: Abel, Asher, Jude, Theo, Griffin, Charlotte, Hazel. Grace, Matilda

I don't think we have a particularly country-centric style and while we are big country music fans, and love the culture and therefore don't get a "bad" country association, the only Wyatt's I've known up here in the northeast are more preppy than country anyway.

    Choose what you like! :)
