Daycare- would you say something?

DD and DS went back to daycare yesterdday after being home with me all summer.  DD has done great both days, DS (2) was hysterical when I left yesterday, but got over it quickly and was fine at drop off today.  He's in the same class he was in in June, 1 teacher is the same and the past 2 days there have been 2 different women I haven't seen before.  I asked if the other teacher is still around and she's in a different class now.

I picked them up today at 3:30 and DS's diaper was soaked.  It was marked that he was changed at 2:30, I'm sure he wasn't.  He isn't a big drinker and stays dry for a while so I'm not even sure they changed him at 11:30 like it's marked.  I hate to say something on his 3rd day back, but I also wonder if they're trying new teachers before hiring someone.  If this other teacher was responsible for changing DS's diaper she clearly wasn't.  Should I just let this one go or mention it as a no big deal, just wanted to let them know?

Re: Daycare- would you say something?

  • Mention it.

The key is to ask about it in a non-accusatory way. It's human nature to get defensive so you will get better results wording it lighter.

  • Was it like that the first 2 days? If not, I'd probably keep an eye out for the rest of the week and if it continues, I'd mention it. Maybe he really did soak a diaper in an hour today.
  • Just based on one wet diaper? No, I wouldn't say anything. Could be a fluke. Could be he really did drink that much. Could be he was dry when they changed him at 2:30 and he peed shortly after. Could be anything. If I noticed he was consistently soaked at pickup, then yes I'd say something.
That's what I was thinking too. I would watch everything for a couple of days and if it's a pattern I would mention that it seems that he is drinking more than usual and maybe needs more frequent diaper checks.

  • One instance of many things isn't enough for me to mention (unless it's something serious like utter neglect/abuse, obviously).  Like others said, I'd keep an eye on it.

  • I would just keep an eye on it.  DS has had super full diapers even after being changed shortly before pick up.  But it's not an every day thing so I don't stress about it.  About an hour before I pick up, they wake up from nap, have a snack and go outside.  Some days he'll drink a ton in that situation so he could really fill a diaper.

  • I also wouldn't mention it after one time. This has happened to use too, and I chalked it up to a fluke. If it happens several times, then I'd say something.

  • Agreed that I wouldn't mention it after one time.  I think in 6 months there was one day that I got DS home and there was poop in his diaper.  Literally happened once and never again.  And kids can be random with their diapers too...sometimes DD wakes up in the morning and she's nearly dry, which is strange for a 4 month old, and other days her diaper has 3 pounds of pee in it (or so it feels like).  Just because LO "usually" isn't a big drinker doesn't mean there wasn't an exception.
