Last minute c-section question

Possible stupid question alert: My c/s is scheduled in the early AM tomorrow. Last night I had a weird dream about my water breaking and now I'm wondering...

Do they break your water for you before the actual surgery starts? Or do they just start the incision and dive right in(pun intended)? I realized I didn't ask my dr about that procedural part of it at my pre-op, but figured some of you c/s mamas would know.

  • My husband is a nursing student and saw 2 c-sections last week. He said that they just dove right in. He said it looked like a fountain when they cut into the bag because of all of the pressure!
  • I got to scrub in for a few c-sections in my schooling. I agree with the above. So much fluid! Good luck with your c section!! I am scheduled for next Tuesday!

This was sortof what my dream was like! Funny - like a gushing cartoon whale spout sortof? I just didn't know how they went about it, seems like it would get errrrywhere!

  • Yeah, he said it was like a whale spout- just straight up in the air. He said he had to try not to laugh because he was caught off guard by it.
  • I didn't have my water broken, but when they cut me I could feel it break. It felt like a puddle under my butt and it was really warm. Except for the cutting and pressure that's all I could actually feel.
  • Good luck tomorrow @MrsLaLaBug and my labor buddy @1983lindsey

You could feel the CUTTING?!?!?!  Good god I hope this doesn't happen to me!
Lol I should clear that up. You can feel exactly where the cut it and where they are touching, pulling, and tugging on you.
You can't actually feel the cut, I kept yelling at them that I could feel it and the nurse said I was suppose to but if it hurt then there are some issues haha. So you can feel it without feeling it, if that makes sense.

hmmm I'm wondering if it varies... because I didn't feel A THING, I was nervous I was going to because the numbing was gradual and before the doc got there I could feel the nurse poking my stomach and felt her wipe it down, but she assured me I wouldn't feel anything by the time the doc got in (and that she'd make sure I was numb). I felt a liiiitle bit of pressure when they pulled her out, but that's about it.

  • I couldn't feel anything with my first c-section… I really hope it's the same thing this time around.  My sister did tell me that she could "feel it without feeling it" like a PP said.  Still would rather feel NOTHING! lol.

I asked my Dr. this afternoon about the water breaking thing and he said that sometimes it shoots up, sometimes it spills out on to their surgical drape!  He laughed and said they were used to it and it was "funny" (!!!!!).  So… yea… there's something to lighten the mood I suppose!
  • @justcricket that's what I meant when I said I could feel it without feeling it. I could feel pushing and tugging but not the actual cut. I was completely numb. I'm having a hard time with words, it made sense in my head!
  • Did anyone have to have their placenta cut through?  I have placenta previa and the placenta is in the front so they will have to cut through it.  The doctor mentioned that there would be more bleeding.  Did anyone else have to go through this?  I have one week left to my c-section and I'm getting nervous!

  • Yep they pop the bag gently when they get there. Sometimes it gushes, sometimes it squirts. The suction up a lot of it. When the placenta is anterior, whether, previa or not, it often gets cut through and yes there is lots more bleeding and they work very quickly to get baby out. Most docs can get a baby out in under 3 minutes if they have to from the time of the first incision. But usually during scheduled sections they take a little more care dissecting things as they go.
