Reflux Check-In (9/2)

This is a weekly check-in for May mamas of LOs with reflux. Returning or new to the Check-In, we'd love to hear from you!

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since last Check-In?

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

4 - Did you do anything special for the holiday weekend?

1 - DD is 14.5 weeks old. She's been on meds for reflux since July 21.

2 - We didn't give her the Prevacid on Saturday and she was a pukey mess all that day and part of Sunday too. Not sure if it's coincidence or not, but I'm scared to find out. the Chiro really wants her off meds, but to be honest I don't see a huge difference after 5 Chiro appts, and pedi said we would reevaluate meds at her 4 month wellness visit. She is also teething, and I don't think the extra drool she has going on is helping the puke/gagging situation any. I also started her back on probiotics last week....we will see if that does anything.

3 - Has the pedi explained to anyone on meds when is a good time to try weaning? I really don't want to keep her on Prevacid for long, especially since I've been reading things that say it isn't approved by FDA for infants due to lack of testing showing it works, and also hat it isn't good to keep infants on it for longer than 8 weeks. DD has been gaining weight and eating well since birth, so I'm really torn as to whether or not she should be in the meds to begin with. Though I hate seeing her projectile vomit and spit up almost all if what she ate, including thru her nose. Reflux sucks.

4 - We did absolutely nothing. Ha. I did take a photo of DD for her 100 day bday on Saturday! I can't believe summer is over -- the time just flew by and I feel like we didn't really get to do anything to enjoy it.

  • What an adorable little girl @giggler25!

    1. My DD is 15 weeks I think (May 20). She has been on reflux meds since middle of July'ish. She started on Zantac and has been on Prevacid for 1 week now.

    2. She started cereal last Friday. Im hoping between the Enfamil AR and doing cereal once a day, she can get off meds sooner rather than later! She seems a little happier the past few days :)

    3. Nothing really to share! @giggler25‌ my pediatrician didnt say much, basically just that we dont want to increase unless we have to, which I agree with.

    4. The most we did this weekend was dry wall our garage! Exciting I know :)
  • 1-LO will be 16 weeks tomorrow.

2-This week has been ok. We are transitioning formulas and increased the Zantac. Today is 1 week with new formula. It is still a combination of both alimentum and total comfort. I'm guessing Saturday we should be fully on total comfort. At firSt he was spitting up with every bottle, but as of yesterday no spit ups! Yay! He has been having fits here and there, screaming for 10 mins-1 hour. It's hard to tell what is bothering him anymore.

3- I don't really have any tips, as everyday is something new for me and LO. I know this is reflux post, but anyone's LO have flat spots? He rarely lays flat, but sleeps in RnP. I feel like it's from my forearm. He always buries his head into my arm. We are now trying to correct this and I'll be going to BRU tomorrow to see if they have anything to help. Always something! :(

4-We didnt do much of anything for Labor Day. Tomorrow my mom is watching LO, do DH and I can go out for a little.

@giggler25‌ First off your DD is too cute!!! I love her colorful dress!

As far as meds go, I been thinking the same thing about weaning, but they just keep increasing. I feel like baby will have his Aha moment one of these days for us to wean. I will bring this up with pedi at next appt. And yes reflux does suck a lot! I hope things get better for all of us....happy babies=happy mommies!
  • P.S. I always write this with my left hand on my phone while rocking LO to sleep, I apologize in advance for spelling or incomplete thoughts!
  • @bridetobe9132013 -- thanks!  I totally agree about not wanting to increase meds --- I am starting to doubt that the Prevacid is working at all though, so not sure what the point of keeping her on it is.  Dry walling your garage is huge -- I haven't been able to accomplish anything nearly as adventurous since DD arrived!  :)

@fairytalewed -- Awesome for no spit-ups!!  I don't have much advice for flat spots, except that I have heard that RnP can cause flat spots.  I don't think it's necessarily a flat surface that causes them but rather the baby laying on the same part of the head repeatedly.  Perhaps try laying her down on left side and right side, alternating?  That's what I've been trying to do to ensure her head stays as round as possible!  I hope you and DH had a nice time out together!!
  • This weekend has been a little rough. DD was spitting up more than she has before all day yesterday. I am starting to think prevacid isn't doing much for her. I thought cereal was supposed to help with the spit up? I dont even know what we will do next!
