anyone use podcast app to listen on the commute?

I wanted to start listening to some different podcasts on my commute to mix it up and not listen to radio all the time but not listen to audiobooks either...short &sweet and interesting...

I downloaded the podcast app (to an iphone) and then thought I downloaded a bunch of podcasts and ted talks. I figured I had to download them so as not to stream them while driving & use data from my plan...gave it a try today & they wouldnt play. It would start, and then stop after a couple seconds, and wouldn't go past about 10 seconds. When I got home I opened it & it worked fine. I even turned it to airplane mode to make sure i wasn't accessing wifi or my cellular network and it still played just fine. WTH??? Why wouldn't it play in the car? I have noticed the same thing happens on my phone when I download voice mail messages from my work email- they just won't play.

Any ideas???

  • it won't even play through the phone I haven't tried using the car audio yet... But in searching online I found it is a terrible app and many ppl w same problem... There is an (annoying) workaround where you turn on airplane mode, start playing it, pause it, turn off airplane mode and then replay and it miraculously works... Ugh but I did enjoy listening to Ted talks on the way to work!

It's all of them and they're definitely downloaded since I was able to listen in airplane mode & also this morning w/ the workaround... and a very common issue w/ this app apparently based on my searches on apple help forums (found that info after I posted here). I think the podcast app is terrible but unfortunately it is the only one I know of where you can download all different podcasts in once place, vs. having the 'ted' app and the 'npr; app, etc. They immediately go to the next one on your list when you're done so I don't have to mess w/ the phone and switch apps or start a new one, etc. Just have to mess around w/ settings to get it to start playing in the beginning..

Would love any podcasting app recs besides the apple one that has a large library including ted talks! :)
