UTIs?

So I've never in my life had a UTI....until now.  I met with the nurse last week and they took urine and blood samples for various tests, and apparently I have a super low-grade UTI and my doctor wants to treat it because I'm pregnant.  She's prescribing a 7-day treatment of Macrobid, and told me it's totally safe.    A quick Google search showed a few mixed reviews, although most things I've read said it's OK and the risks of NOT treating a UTI far outweigh the risks of the medicine.  But still, I'm not very happy about this.  Has anyone had this issue before while pregnant?  Someone please set my mind at ease.

Re: UTIs?

  • I never had one when I was pregnant with DS, but I believe uti's are super common during pregnancy. I would trust your doc and treat the uti, they will not do anything that would jeopardize your pregnancy!

  • No I haven't but I have had a uti about a year ago.

It's not something that can go untreated. I mean, it can, but then you will have a bladder infection which can lead to a kidney infection. So, it should not go untreated.

I don't know about medication, but from here on out I would recommend you increase your water intake (often you can get the infection from being dehydrated so you don't pee often enough to clear the bacteria out), shower more frequently, even if you're not washing your hair, just to get the daily oils off your privates and of course pee after intercourse if you don't already do these things (which you may be doing already, in which case more water!)

    Best wishes

  • I haven't had a UTI during pregnancy, but used to get them frequently.  I can totally understand the fear of putting drugs in your body while you're pregnant.  However, I would agree that the dangers of NOT treating a UTI are much greater than taking an antibiotic.

If you are concerned with this particular antibiotic, discuss it with your doctor to see if there might be another one you'd be more comfortable.
