Adoption

Imagine if it was this easy to get a kid!

Friday night, I submitted an inquiry to a dog rescue about a dog I saw posted on FB (I "like" the rescue on FB because my friend is a coordinator). We have two dogs and really aren't in the market for another one, but he's a Foxhound and I have a soft spot in my heart for them because we used to have one when I was growing up. Saturday morning, the lady I emailed told me he has a foster family that's going to let her know later this week if they're going to adopt him. A few hours later, she emailed asked me to call her and I did. She proceeded to tell me that the transport broke down and was out of commission for half a day and that the foster family could no longer meet the transport in Virginia, and then asked me if we could foster him because he was going to be in Connecticut the next morning. So, about 15 hours later, he came home with us. It was crazy!
Happily married Mom to 2 beautiful little girls, 2 dogs and 2 cats (all rescues), 2 fish and one 29 year-old firebelly newt.

Re: Imagine if it was this easy to get a kid!

  • One of my friends is an adoption coordinator for this particular rescue (though, we are assigned to a different coordinator) and we already had an application on file with them. For this particular rescue, I didn't need to go through the whole references/home visit/vet check like I did with my last two rescued dogs, because I've known this friend for over ten years, she has been to my house many times, and we go to the same vet that the rescue works with up here in CT. If was any other rescue, I would have had to go through the whole rigamarole.

I do agree that the dogs are often not vetted enough. Especially in this case. I have asked for an intake form to learn more about his background and I have not been provided one yet. All I know is that he was given up because he wouldn't hunt.

I also found out from a hound expert yesterday that he's not a Foxhound; he's a Treeing Walker Coonhound, which is basically a foxhound that was bred to hunt coons and other tree animals.

We are only fostering him at this point. He's up on Petfinder, waiting for an adopter. He's a really great dog with great temperament with all people and dogs, but he's clearly never lived in a house and needs a lot of training, so we are working on house manners with him. He's going to make a fabulous pet once he learns the basics. :)
