Cloth Diapering

Question for those with non-HE top loaders.

Especially if you use powdered Tide.... How much detergent do you use for a smallish load of diapers? Aka about 15 pockets stuffed with flats..... Does the amount you use change according to how large of a load you are doing.....like if you added towels to the load to make it a large load?

  • I use 2TB for 2 days of diapers.
  • I use up to the first line for 2 days of diapers and a couple towels. I have hard water and use the large load setting. Our medium load setting doesn't even fill the drum halfway. So annoying.

  • I've been using soap nuts for my laundry and it was working great for me as long as I was only using cotton flats and covers. Now I have a handful of bamboo flats and have been using my pockets stuffed with flats and the soap nuts just aren't working that well on the synthetic fibers of the bamboo and microfleece/microsuede/cb liners of the pockets. I'm debating if adding Tide to the pre-wash and the soap nuts in the wash is effective enough or if I should just use Tide for the whole diaper wash load. In the meantime, I'm getting irritated with so many people insisting that because diapers contain human waste and are therefore heavily soiled and the detergent manufacturer recommendation is to line 3 for heavily soiled, all diaper loads, even small ones, need to line 3 minimum. I have never used more than line 2 on any large loads so I refuse to use line 3 on my small loads. With the agitation of my machine, my diapers come out ALMOST clean after the pre-wash so I don't agree with the idea that diapers are heavily soiled.....to me they are no more soiled than the rest of my laundry. I know they are NOT clean after the pre-wash, just to ease everyone's mind on that detail. I think either way I do it, I'll start with the 3tbsp of Tide that I used to use for my normal laundry and adjust from there.
