Cloth Diapering

Stripping question

So I've been cloth diapering for a while. And we use Motherease one size 2 in 1 diapers. Where the covers are separate from the inserts. Well we got new covers last December when DD was around 1. Well I haven't been using them for the last month b/c I put them on her and they just stink. The thing is, it's the covers that smell!! I talked to my cloth diaper company, they said to use more soap and that their diapers should never need to be stripped. And for the inserts I'll agree. But how to you strip covers!! I mean I feel like boiling them might ruin the wetness protection. My hubby suggested steaming them, I feel lost. Thanks.

What do they smell like? Ammonia? Barn yard? Poo?
What kind of detergent do you use? Do you hang dry or machine dry? Were they brand new covers or used?

They smell like pee, I use tide pods, I machine dry, but I have options to hang them outside to dry. They were brand new when I got them last year.

I think part of the problem is that when people watch DD they leave the covers on really wet or nasty diapers.

That shouldn't make the covers smell. Have you tried washing on hot with no detergent to check for build up? Do they smell immediately after the wash or only once they're peed in?

I have not tired that. So you can get build up in covers too? They still kinda smell even after a wash. Should I try vinegar on my covers? Or boiling them?

Do not boil PUL, elastic, snaps ever

I would try another wash on hot and dry them in the sun

I wouldn't boil covers. I fear you you destroy the plu. Try a hot water strip, multiple washes in only hot water, if that dosent take care of it try rlr.

    Boiling will definitely ruin PUL

I agree with the masses. Hot water strip in the washer, not boiling. Then try a plain powder detergent rather than the pods.
I might also dry them outside to get some sun and fresh air if the weather is still ok up there.

Okay this is helpful, I didn't realize you should be using powder instead of liquid. I will not boil my diaper covers, I wondered if that would ruin them.

Ya it's still good up here, in fact today it was quite humid :p
