Anyone teething yet?

P was early, born May 21st. He's 3 months old now, but his adjusted age is 2 months. It seems way to early for him to be teething, but I'm starting to think he is. He is constantly wanting to chew; my boobs, pacifiers, fingers, toys, whatever he can get his mouth on. I thought at first it was a growth spurt and he was hungry but its just chewing. His little cheeks are very rosy and his face seems extra warm, but no fever. It seems too early for teething. Anyone else's little ones teething early? Could this be something else?

Re: Anyone teething yet?

  • I am in the same boat! LO was born at 36 weeks May 23 and is having all the same signs. Also he is drooling a TON and loves to chew on those ice teether toys. When I have given him tylenol it really seems to help. I don't know if he is teething this early or if that is even possible!?

  • Max, born April 27 at 34 weeks has been doing this for several weeks now. It's just developmentally appropriate behavior! Not necessarily anything to do with teeth as typically the earliest to cut a tooth would be four months, but more likely 6 months or later.

  • Mine has been chomping on my fingers for weeks now and I just noticed that there's a little white corner that has popped through her lower gum! So I guess she has been teething. (She's 10 weeks but was born 2 weeks late.)
  • It could be teeth, but it is unlikely. At this age, they are discovering their hands. Babies also use their mouths to experience the world so anything they get a hold of goes straight there.
This was what I was originally thinking. I kept telling people "No its too early for teething, it just that he's discovered his hands." but after hearing again and again that he appears to be teething I started thinking maybe he is. Plus he is so aggressive about it. I'm afraid he is going to chew his fingers and my nipples off.

  • It could happen. My mom told me I cut my first tooth at a month and the doctor didn't believe her until she took me in and he saw the white nub popping through. That's a rarity though I think, and is probably just a developmental thing like others said. My LO is doing the same thing.

  • Here too!!  LO will be 3 months on Sept 3rd and has had her hands in her mouth for the past month!!!  Decided to put on the amber necklace in hopes that she isn't in to much pain...i can't see anything poking through yet but soon i am sure!!!
  • https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12421703/teething - seems like the consensus was it's highly unlikely at this age.

  • I'm most certain Isaiah is teething. I don't see buds yet, but he is extra drooly and chewing on everything. DD#1 had her two bottom teeth by the time she was 3 months old, and Isaiah is exhibiting all the things she did.

  • We've got a tooth visible here already and the rest of the miserable symptoms. It's made for a stressful week.

  • Babies can exhibit a lot of teething sons before the teeth actually pop through. It can take a long while. I'm thinking charlie is starting, but it took his sister a couple months of misery before she finally popped a tooth out.

  • My mom is convinced S is exhibiting signs of getting ready to start teething.

I just think she's drooly and fussy.

    Who knows.

  • This is an excellent blog on signs of teething that I ran across the other day. Charlie has a bunch of them, but who knows.

  • I would strongly prefer that LO not get teeth just yet, so I hope all the drool is just drool. There's plenty of time for teething in the coming months.

  • My LO is 13 weeks and last night I got a visual of her first tooth poking through. At about 3 months she can't really reliably hold and gnaw on a teething ring. I don't think she's extra fussy quite yet. What do you do for teething? Also, does this mean I need to start brushing her mouth (and was I supposed to have been doing that all along??)?

Just an FYI, about 2 weeks ago I thought I saw a part of a tooth poking through LO's gums (he was 18 weeks at the time) and after some research realized it was more likely an epstein pearl, which it ended up being as it is now gone.  That could possibly be what you are seeing, too :)

Oooh thank you! I will look into that.
  • Yup....totally not a tooth. This is why the bump is great!
