Pregnant after a Loss

Paragaurd IUD connected to inability to carry a term baby??? Help please!

I have looked at all the other boards and couldn't find a better one to ask this question to.

I have been doing a lot of internet searches since this loss about the connection between paragaurd iud and infertility and inability to carry to term...while I haven't found a whole lot about the connection...though some pharmasudical sites suggest it a possibility...I HAVE found many links to other women asking the same question with no responses...no I would like to ask y'all...have any of u had the device and then after removal suffered recurrent miscarriages...making it appear that you will no longer be able to carry to term? I never had this problem until the first pregnancy after the iud...and as far as my ob is concerned I have no genetic defects or uterin abnormalities leaving the losses unexplainable...just hoping maybe some of u can tell me ur experiences with this...thanks everyone

Re: Paragaurd IUD connected to inability to carry a term baby??? Help please!

  • This is just my experience.

Last October, I got pregnant while the Paragard was still in my ute. My OB was able to safely remove it at about 4w2d. I did end up miscarrying at 11w5d, with it being discovered at 12w5d. I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and have no complications so far. I did have one successful pregnancy prior to my Paragard. My OB told me after my d&c that she thought maybe the removal of the Paragard caused swelling and irritation in my ute that later caused my miscarriage - but idk if she just said that to make me feel better. I have to think that since so many women has used Paragard for quite a while, if there was a connection, you would be able to find answers online. At the very least, I feel like there would be class-action lawsuits against Paragard makers.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please let me know if I can answer anything more or help in any way. Take care of yourself.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Well when I got it it caused severe bleeding with clots and I felt like I was in labor every day if had it...but only heavy bleeding that subsides was a listed side effect...this was three years ago...it is still a fairly uncommon method when compared to mirana and other BC...so maybe it just hasn't happened enough with enough women making the connection??? It has been linked to infertility...so that's why I'm (currently) so stuck on this theory...I'm so glad to hear that u are having a healthy pregnancy so far and T&P that it leads to a healthy happy baby!!! All I want right now are others experiences so thank you very much and good luck hun

  • After I posted, I got to thinking that I only had mine in for 12 months, maybe if you have one longer there are more issues with infertility?

Please let me know if you find any answers. Best to you.

  • I only had mine in for 3-4 months...going to speak with the dr on Tuesday morning and see if they can access medical reports and possibly give me any statistics on it...I know they have a lot more access to that type of thing than any of is ever will

They cant tell you whats in other people's records and unless they want to do the research for their own published paper, its a lot to sift through... so dont get your hopes up.... sorry

  • I mean they should know any statistics on it better and more accurately than I can find doing simple google searches...they have FDA records already set on their computers that update constantly that tell them about every prescription out there and all reported side effects and the occurrence rate of those side effects...it's not rly digging I want to get from them...just that program brought up and looked at for me...I've had it done with a few meds before and see no reason why they wouldn't do it for this reason...like I said...I'm all over the place right now and just want SOMETHING...
  • You should be able to google FDA records, too. It should be public knowledge, but if they just need to pull it up and print it out for you, I'm sure that they will. GL

  • I don't have any experience with Paraguard or any other IUDs, but I will say that you may want to try seeing a RE because OBs do not do the extensive testing that REs do. I had 4 losses and my OB couldn't explain it either because of how "great" everything looked internally and how my bloodwork always looked to them. I got more answers from a RE. GL to you!

  • They don't even want to refer me to an RE because I have two healthy kids...this didnt start until after the iud...and Ashermans...I'm terrified that's what will happen when I go in for a D&C this coming week...but I'm only doing it because I've pretty much given up (right now anyway) on having another baby...just don't know how many more heartbreaks like this I can handle...
  • ***lurking***

I had mirena in for 15 months after I gave birth to my second DD. I've had 2 miscarriages this year and was convinced I had some scarring or complications from the IUD. After 10 months and 2 losses, I finally went to see an RE and it turns out I have DOR and very low AMH for my age. I just wanted to say that if I hadn't gone to see an RE I would have been convinced that it was my IUD that did this to me instead of my current diagnosis.

Stop. Get a second opinion from another RE before proceeding with that D&C. Blind scraping (a D&C) is contraindicated for Asherman's patients! If all other chemical methods fail, they should be looking at an operative hysteroscopy (direct visual, much more delicate procedure), not a D&C which is too rough and virtually guaranteed to cause more Asherman's adhesions. If you need to find an RE who specializes in Asherman's Disease, let me know.
All of this!  Definitely find a RE that knows what they are doing and how to handle the Asherman's.  You don't want another doctor going in blind (D&C).  I'm so sorry you're going through all of this.
