In Toronto you pretty much want to be on a list at the same time you are locking down an OB. I thought it was too early first time around and that it would 'jinx' things but when I called places when my son was 4 weeks old they laughed at me.
It's never too early to inquire, even if you are in a low demand area. I'd call a few and see what their standard wait lists look like. That might at least give you a time frame for doing some research or going on tours
I had no idea people really did this outside of, like, NYC. So relieved I don't have to worry about this... our kid will be attending "day care" at grandma's house.
It's definitely not too early. I live in a small town where there are only two daycares and we are both full. It's amazing the number of people I have to turn away or put on a wait list.
