First time poster: TTC for 13 months

Hi All,

I'm a first time poster. I am 35 and my husband and I have been TTC for over a year. We have been through all of the testing and discovered that my tests look good, but his counts are pretty bad, especially motility. We are going in on the 10th do determine if and when we should attempt IVF, but today I found out that I have some high risk precancerous cells on my cervix and I need to have a LEEP procedure to clear the infection. As a result, we now have to put off IVF. This procedure increases my risk for miscarriage as well. It's been a tough day. 

I have been pretty optimistic about everything until today... so here I am reaching out to strangers. I just can't see myself talking to people who aren't going through it themselves.

carrieharry79! I, too, am sad to hear your news, but hope that you are now on your way to a full and speedy recovery and a successful IVF down the road. I'm also glad they found the cells now and hope the procedure to remove them will be quick. One of the women here has a cartoon picture of a sparkling "renovated ute" in her signature, which always makes me smile. Good luck!

First off-- I am so sorry to hear about all the troubles you are dealing with. I hope your LEEP procedure goes well and things go well for you in the IVF process. 

FWIW, I had cancerous cells in my cervix when I was 23, and had cervical dysplasia. They ended up cutting out a large chunk of my cervix, and told me I may never be able to carry a baby to full term. Well...I have two little ones at home....so have faith!

Welcome! You've come to the right place for support!. While I haven't had the experience of the LEEP, I can understand the frustration that comes with putting off your dreams of becoming pregnant and the worry of miscarriage. It makes you feel out of control. Hang in there and good luck.

The leep isn't pleasant but you will get through it! Sorry you have to deal with that. I've been through it twice unfortunately. Much better than the alternative, glad they caught it when they did. You should have plenty if cervix left to carry, they will monitor your last trimester closely to make sure that it can withstand weigh of the baby (according to my obgyn). When it's time I wish you luck with the IVF! Just a temporary setback, you will get there. Hugs

Hi there! I'm in the exact same boat. I need a LEEP procedure as well to remove some high-grade precancerous cells. However, after talking to my ob/gyn, and learning about the risks and actual numbers/data, the window of me being able to have/carry a baby (I'll be 41 next month) verses the window of the precancerous cells turning to cancer (a number more years and only 7% of women with high grade turned into cancer after 7 years) is shorter. Plus, if you have a LEEP, you cannot really even begin to conceive for about 4-6 months. At my age, that's too long.

So, I opted to move forward with IVF and have the LEEP procedure after the baby is born (ideally, if we are lucky enough to have a baby). Please note that this is not without additional risk, so my ob/gyn did a VERY thorough colposcopy right before we went it on our IUI cycle (and now we've moved to IVF). She will be monitoring me every 3 months during pregnancy with a PAP (since your immune system is compromised during pregnancy).

I know this sounds a bit risky, but with the relative risk of not being able to conceive at 41 (my current year) vs the risk of cells turning to cancer (likely not for a few more years), I'm opting to mitigate the risk that will turn into issue closer to the present day, first. Perhaps you want to run this option by your ob/gyn to see if s/he would support it with close monitoring?

Also, please note that the big c word does scare me, so I don't take it lightly: my mother had 2 forms of cancer and died. So I didn't make this decision lightly.

Btw: IVF cycle 1, 9 eggs, 7 ICSI, 3 zygotes Day 1. Waiting to hear if we will be able to transfer any this week.

VAinNYC. I went ahead with the LEEP last week and was told that I would need to wait only a month before trying to conceive. I wonder why your doctor gave you such a different story! I am meeting with our fertility specialist later today, so I hope I didn't get that wrong. 

If we were in your position, I would have done the exact same thing. I even felt that way pushing 36.... Times moves fast and I would like to have multiple kids. Let me know how it goes! We are probably going to set up ICSI today due to my husbands counts being less than stellar. I hope you get the okay and everything works out on the first try!
