MSPI baby stopped pooping

We have been dairy and soy free for almost 2 months and my EBF 3 month old has not pooped since Sunday or Monday, that's almost 5 days! Before this he would go several times a day, there was pretty much some poop at every diaper change, then it slowed down to twice a day, now nothing!

Before eliminating milk and soy, he tested positive for blood and mucus. After a month the blood was gone, but he still had mucus. The pedi just wanted me to keep restricting my diet, and they were going to keep checking his poop at future appointments.

I know people say EBF babies can go days without pooping, but IMO that is not normal or healthy. And there seems to be a lot of research coming out about gut health and long term health.

I don't know what to do, wait it out or call the pedi. Request to see a GI specialist?

Re: MSPI baby stopped pooping

  • It's true that ebf babies can go days without pooping because breastmilk is digested and used more efficiently leaving less waste matter to be pooped out. IME, how the baby is acting is a better indicator than just the calendar. If baby is happy and not fussy then baby is not constipated and needs no help pooping. On the other hand, if baby is fussy and otherwise acting uncomfortable or in pain then constipation may be a concern.
