Baby Food Thread

I thought I'd start a thread about baby food to see if people would be interested in talking about it! I've been reading a lot from Wholesomebabyfood.com but want to hear what all the M14 babies are up to!

1. Make-your-own or store-bought?

2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?

3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?

4. Concerns or questions?

5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?

Re: Baby Food Thread

  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought?
    Store bought oatmeal
Made my own avacado, banana, and sweet potato

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?
We just started with oatmeal Tuesday. Planning to try sweet potato Saturday.

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?
No mixing yet as we've only tried one thing so far.

    4. Concerns or questions?
Trying to figure out a system of making food in large and small quantities with breastmilk. There seems to be so many rules on fresh, refrigerated, frozen, and then refrigerating, freezing, yadda yadda yadda.

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?
DH hates avacado and that's gonna be one of LOs first foods, so I'm interested to see what she thinks!

  • 1. Store bought so far. I do plan on doing my own avocado though.

    2. We've done sweet potato, butternut squash, mango. She seemed to really like the sweet potato and squash. I have some green beans and peas to try next.

    3. Haven't mixed anything yet.

    4. How much should we cut back on bottles? And I'm confused about introducing water too. How much, when, etc. I just want to make sure all of her nutritional needs are being met.

    5. I just like watching her experience new stuff in general. There's not one that sticks out in my mind.

  • 1. Store bought.

    2. Shes had cereal , bananas, apples, pears. sweet potato's , carrots, peas which she hates. I would say sweet potato's and pears are her favs !

3.I've put cereal in with her food, but she's not a fan of the cereal so we just stick with it out of the jar.

    4. Same as @theluckiest9 , she still eats the same amount of formula every 3 hours. Sometimes more frequently/

5.I love Mac and cheese I cant wait for her to try that ( down the road of course). He loves peanut butter which I'm defiantly not a fan of .

  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought? Both. Store bought things I'm too lazy to make: grains or fruit/veggie combos - I really like the Sprout organics pouches.
    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites? Apples, pears, bananas, oatmeal, brown rice, cinnamon, yams/sweet potatoes, green beans (hated them), avocado. LOVES yams. LOVES banana/cinnamon/brown rice combo.
    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites? yes. see #2. We only do combos if it's one new thing in them she hasn't tried.
    4. Concerns or questions? SO MUCH FUN. I wish there was more foods that help her poop (pears) and dont make her constipated (apples and bananas I'm lookin at you!)
    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes? I hate bananas and avocado. lol so there's that.
  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought?
Both: I buy brown rice cereal and a variety of veggies if they are on sale; I've made sweet potatoes, bananas, and chicken (we haven't tried that yet, just had some plain leftover chicken breast to use up)

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?
brown rice cereal (he loves it even though I think it tastes like styrofoam), sweet potatoes (another hit), bananas (not a fan), and mango (didn't like this, but it was pretty tart). Next up is probably green beans.

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?
    We haven't tried combos yet.

    4. Concerns or questions?

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes? I despise broccoli and MH loves it. I'm interested to see what J thinks.

    1. Make-your-own or store-bought?

Make our own except for oatmeal. I was just considering today though that I might get a few store-bought jars for travel so we don't need to worry about refrigeration if we are out all day.

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?

In order: sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, pears, green beans, peaches, oatmeal. She didn't like avocado, and didn't like green beans at first but we started mixing them with peaches (weird I know but it's what we had frozen) and she liked it. We'll probably keep reducing the fruit in it until she tolerates it straight. She LOVED the sweet potatoes and all the fruit.

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?

We've done oatmeal with peaches for breakfast the last few days. Also see above about the green beans ;)

    4. Concerns or questions?

Also a bit concerned about formula intake. Pedi said she should be eating 25-30oz with the solids and she's been consistently on the upper end of that. However, we have a scale at home and weigh LO every few days. She has been climbing up in weight (and percentiles) a bit rapidly lately so I'm wondering if she is eating too much now with the solids. At the same time I don't want to underfeed her :-/ I'm wondering if I should add start introducing cups with water because maybe some of her bottle eating is just thirst from the solids?

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?

Neither of us like avocado and LO didn't either, so probably aren't going to push it.

To answer a PP question about chicken, our pedi said that meat was OK from 4 months on. The sheet they gave us claimed the newest research shows that early introduction of foods can actually reduce allergies, so they only gave us a very few restrictions.

  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought?
I've made my own so far but bought oatmeal. Im not opposed to buying but Im cheap!

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?
Apples, sweet potatoes, banana....carrot are up next. She doesn't seem impressed with eating! She just wants her sippy cup and her little arms can barely lift it!

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites? Not yet

    4. Concerns or questions? I dont remember how we weaned bottles with my son! I just know by 10 months he had a morning and bedtime bottle and 2 "snack time" bottles at daycare. By 1 year it was just a night time bottle and he decided his sippy was better a few weeks after his birthday. Im hoping it allcomes back to me.

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?

Nothing really. Finger foods were so much more fun!

  • Wow! I actually forgot I had to work this afternoon/evenig , so it was so nice to come back and see all the responses!! I can't wait to get up to more of a variety. I'm irrationally excited about all this.
I'm glad to see someone has tried cinammon because I saw on the website encouragement of seasoning the food.
As for the allergenic foods, my pedi also said she's stopping recommending later introduction. So I basically got the go ahead for all foods with a few day wait period.

    1. Make-your-own or store-bought?

Store bought,  would like to make my own but not sure how.  Any tips?

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?

Rice cereal, green beans and green peas.  she will eat anything I offer so far,  including antibiotics for a sinus/ear infection and an antifungal (thrush)
    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?

Have mixed the veggies with the cereal,  like I said, I offer, she eats.  Its great so far
    4. Concerns or questions?

Any tips on making your own baby food.  anything other then the obvious: cook until done and puree
    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?

I am allergic to most tropical fruits such as pineapple, mango(which will kill me), coconut, avocado...  may wait until she is older to try those.

  • @alfriedeck everything I've learned and done has come from wholesomebabyfood.com. it has great directions for cooking, freezing, storing, mixing, etc. Basically we've washed very well, cooked, pureed with breast milk (but you can do water or formula), froze in ice cube trays, and then stored in ziplocked bags in the freezer. Each ice cube is about a serving.

  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought?
Make my own.  It's as easy as everyone says it is.

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites?
Brown rice cereal, carrots, string beans, banana, pear, apple, nectarines.  DDs favorite is carrots.  She only likes the rice cereal with milk.

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites?
Not yet.  We're getting her used to the separate flavors though we have started experimenting with seasonings.  The rice cereal goes down much better with a little garlic powder.

    4. Concerns or questions?
I want to introduce more vegetables but I'm not sure which ones are best.

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes?
Lime beans.  I hate them with a passion.
  • What does everyone think i should mix with green beans (other than milk) to re-try them (she has tried twice and both times i got the stink face for all 5ish bites)

    garlic? onion powder? apples? lol

Does she like sweet potatoes? Maybe mix the green beans with sweet potatoes...

  • 1. Making our own

    2. So far we have done peas, carrots, pears (BLW style), oatmeal, and avacado. Carrots were a dud, avacado was a huge hit.

    3. We just mix breastmilk, water, and oatmeal in with her food

    4. Nothing really.... Just hoping to keep up on making out own food since we have so much money in to the whole operation!

    5. GTKY: I am a super picky eater and DH will eat anything. We are hoping she takes after him. DH is dying to eventually get to eat more interesting foods with someone in this house on a regular basis.

  • 1. Make-your-own or store-bought? We're mostly doing BLW, so haven't had buy or make anything special so far. I did buy some oatmeal cereal though. I'm going to make some purees this weekend and prep some so she has something to eat if our meals don't have anything appropriate for her.

    2. What have you given so far? Any favorites? Carrots, avocado, cantelope, watermelon, sweet potato, oatmeal cereal, cheese (accident! she stole it from me and chowed down!) Plus I've given her cucumber to gnaw on for teething, which she loves. She really liked cantelope and avocado.

    3. Have you mixed things together? Any favorites? Nope

    4. Concerns or questions? How many times are you offering solids a day? DD is about 7 months old. My current goal is twice daily, but we've started pretty slowly.

    5. GTKY: What are some foods that you or DH absolutely love or hate that you can't wait to see if LO likes? Not really. DH will eat almost anything I make.

  • z‌Sweet potatoes were a success today!
For those that make and freeze, how do you thaw and warm? With and without breast milk?

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @Jt7dreamz‌ I hear ya on the portions! She only ate like a third of an ice cube portion.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @sanibel21 I make pretty thick purees with water. I defrost each cube in the microwave for about 45 seconds on 30% power. If I'm on the ball and remember to prep ahead of time I let it defrost on the counter. It usually only takes about 15 minutes so I've not worried about bacterial growth. If the puree needs thinning I add additional water or breast milk after it's thawed.

  • Question regarding introduction of fruits/veggies.  When you try a new food, say banana, do you feed it to them then wait 3-5 days before feeding it to them again or do you continue to feed it to them daily (assuming there is no reaction) and then introduce a new food at 3-5 days?

  • I've stopped mixing with milk. She liked it more.
I make mine into squeeze pouches. We can freeze those. She eats about 2-3 oz a sitting.

As long as there's no reaction you can continue to give it to them daily. But no other new food that they haven't before until 3-5 days later. (At least that's my understanding.)
