Pregnant after IF

UPDATE! Some relief and joy!

I was at wit's end yesterday, being held in limbo, with no doctor claiming me as their patient. I hadn't had an u/s or b/w in over three weeks. My longest pregnancy, prior to this one, was 10wks. I am today 11w1d. With my history, I couldn't even assume my fetus was still growing.

I called my former RE to request my records so I can shop around for a new OB, and as luck would have it, my former nurse, who I loved, answered the phone. I spilled my whole story. She was appalled. I asked if there was ANY way I could come in for u/s and b/w. She said what I know, that they have already released me as a patient, and they never see anyone as far along as I am... but she would talk to the RE and get back with me. Well, they fit me in this morning! Before we got started I looked her straight in the eye and told her how grateful I am that she was allowing me to come in. She was very nice about it.

My fetus looks healthy! Big, measuring at 11w4d, and a hb of 179. The RE was smiling and giggling, she said because she never gets to see babies this big (they graduate patients at 8wks.) I cried with relief. The RE (whose practice is very far from my home) said she dislikes the hospital in my city and strongly recommends I choose a hospital that's almost an hour away from home. Considering all the trouble I've had, I talked to my DH, and we're going to look into it. It was not our preference to have a doctor and hospital so far from home, but we may have to make this choice for the well being of the pregnancy.

Thank you ALL ladies, for your support and encouragement as I've been dealing with OB hell. This morning has brought me so much joy and peace. Yes, I'm very anxious to take my MaT21 test, but I now have a fresh wave of patience and calm to deal with the next step, which looks like finding a new OB/MFM. Whew. :)

Re: UPDATE! Some relief and joy!

  • Great update!!! So happy that your baby is thriving and that the RE helped. I'm sure this was a big relief for you to see the baby and renewed your strength to deal with the OB situation.

I totally agree with finding a doctor further away. While we all like to be close by etc, the reality is that you need good care. I'm not sure if you are in a rural area with small practices? (Esp since the one OB said you had too many "problems"... No one would blink an eye at those "problems" where I am) Is an hour away more of a city? Anyway, lots of people drive an hour for care. I'm about 45 minutes outside of Boston and wouldn't think twice to head there if I couldn't get what I needed locally. Sending you T&Ps that you will find someone soon :-)

  • That is wonderful!!

I know it sounds far, but an hour is not that bad. My friend had a hospital one hour and 20 mins away. As long as you're not driving from NJ to NY at rush hour, or in downtown LA, I think you'll be fine. I would much rather have great service a little farther away. Also, if an emergency comes up, you'll always have the other hospitals nearby :) Plus, labor lasts 16 hours so you'll have plenty of time ;-)

  • I am so happy to see this update!  You must be so relieved and that is fantastic to hear how kind your old RE's office was.  And even better that your LO is growing nice and strong!

I agree with PP - given all the challenges you have had with finding a local OB/MFM coupled with what the RE said re: hospitals, I think looking at the ones referenced an hour away may not be a bad idea.  And if you are nervous about getting to the hospital as your date approaches, maybe there are friends / family who live closer or an inexpensive hotel you can stay at.

SO very happy for you.  Good luck as you determine next steps and thrilled to hear your little one is doing great!

  • Great update! Glad to hear that baby is measuring healthy and on track.

I just want to echo the 1 hr commute is totally worth it. I drive 90 min to see my Ob and will drive 90 min to deliver (this was our closest option). I live in a small rural town and the hospital doesn't have a NICU unit, this was a requirement for me with twins. After hearing that the local hospital won't delivery prior to 36 weeks, I know we made the right decision. Is it a pain to drive - you bet, but the peace of mind is so worth it!!! Honestly, with so few appointments in the second tri- it wasn't a big deal. Now in the third with bi-weekly and weekly appts. . .I don't mind it too much, I just combine it with real shopping (sorry two wal-marts and a target don't cut it sometimes) so I'm not driving a total of 3 hrs for a 30 minute appointment. In the end, I see it as a slight inconvenience but it is what is best for both me and the babies, and that is all that really matters. Good-luck finding a good Ob/MFM!!

  • So happy to hear your baby looks good and things are looking up. A hospital an hour away is NBD, especially for a first labor -- which is extremely unlikely to happen fast. And in the extremely unlikely event it does happen fast you can go to the local ER.
  • That's wonderful news!!! I hope you can find a great OB and/or MFM with the new hospital. It sounds like the drive is worth it.

  • YAYYY!!!!!!  So glad you called and asked!

And I chose to go to a hospital about 45 minutes away from home, as opposed to the one 15 minutes away from home.  I was really hesitant, but I have never regretted my decision.  I feel so much more comfortable with the practice I am with (compared to the practice that delivers at the local hospital) and I really like the hospital facilities and staff.  If your RE recommends it, and with all the hassle you've already had, I say it's worth considering for sure.

Are there any OBs who deliver at that hospital but have appointments near you?  That's how it worked out for me - 10 minutes to appointments, but 45 minutes to the hospital. It's sort of the best of both worlds without compromising the quality of care!

  • I'm so glad to see this update!! And relieved that the nurse and RE were good people to fit you in. I know it might be hard, but you said it yourself, you have to look out for your best standard of care, and it seems like docs in your area do not want to provide that. Rediculous. I hope that you can find a better solution. Maybe one of the docs at the hospital 1 hr away has offices closer to where you are? Wishing you better luck with your OB/MFM search.
  • Soooooo happy to read this!! Been praying for you! Glad LO is doing well and that you found someone competent enough to deal with your care. Hour drive is a PIA, but worth good care!
    Married 2007
    3 Clomid IUIs -- BFNs
IVF #1 never made it to transfer
    On "egg health" cocktail DHEA/CoQ10/FRC/Pregnitude/Melatonin
Starting IVF #2 for Feb 2013
    Follistim/Menopur/Ganirelix
Cancelled mid-cycle due to high P4 levels early on.
OCPs again for IVF 2.5 mid-March. IVF 2.5 transferred two "gorgeous" 5-day blasts and BFFN. Even REI is baffled
On indefinite hold until a huge stroke of serendipity led me to IVF 3 May 2014
Testing found positive cardiolipins/APS, now on lovenox and intralipid infusions
Transfer of 2 5-day blasts and (FINALLY) BFFP!! 1st ultrasound shows two sacs and two HB, but one is sluggish, almost expecting vanishing twin Subsequent ultrasound confirmed vanishing twin, but my other Little critter looks fantastic!

Hooray!!!  I'm so happy for you!! FWIW, I drive 45 mins to my RE's office and there are a few RE clinics within 15 mins from where I live.  It's better to have a good fit and feel comfortable with the quality of the care they are providing!!  Good Luck with your hunt!!
